PHILOSOPHY and EDUCATION

What is PHILOSOPY?
Philosophy comes from the combination of two Greek words –
“philos” meaning “love”
and
“sophi” meaning “wisdom”.
- love of wisdom
Philosophy is the science of all things studied from the view point of their ultimate causes, reasons, or
principles by the light of human creation alone.
Other meaning of philosophy

Philosophy is persistent attempt to gain insight into the world and of ourselves by means of systematic
reflections.

Philosophy is the science which investigates the nature of being, as it is in itself.

FEATURES OF PHILOSOPHY

1. Philosophy is a set of views or beliefs about life and the universe, which are often held uncritically.
2. Philosophy is a process of reflecting on and criticizing our most deeply held conceptions and
beliefs.
3. Philosophy is a rational attempt to look at the world as a whole.

- ever growing and developing

BRANCHES OF PHILOSPHY

1. Metaphysics

The study of questions concerning the nature of reality or existence.


What is reality?
Does God exist, and if so, can we prove it?
What is time?
What is the meaning of life?

2. Epistemology

The study of nature and how these are attained and evaluated?
What are the sources of knowledge?
What is truth, and how can we know if a statement is true?
3. Axiology

The study of the question of value.


ETHICS – the study of morale principles.

SOCIAL/ POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY – the study of the value judgments operative in civil society.

AESTHETICS – the study of the nature and value of works of art.

NATURE OF EDUCATION
1. Education is a lifelong process

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHILOSOPHY AND EDUCATION

Philosophy and education are closely inter-related and interdependent.

Philosophy points out the ways and education follow it.

Without philosophy education would be a blind effort and without education philosophy would be
crippled.
Philosophy provides answer to the educational issues of why (child), who to educate (teacher),
where to educate (school), to educate (methods), when to educate (motivation) and so the process
of education is based on and adequate philosophy of life.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDYING EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

1. To find the solution for various educational issues.


2. To make education according to the need based life and society.
3. To determine the aim of human life, aim of survival
4. To produce better citizen by fostering democratic attitude in behavior.
5. To make teaching learning process more effective and attractive according to the need,
interest and ability of child.
