2. Two immiscible, incompressible liquids are flowing in the z-direction in a horizontal thin slit of length 10
L and width W under the influence of a horizontal pressure gradient p0 p L L . The fluid rates are
adjusted so that the slit is half filled with fluid I (the more dense phase) and rest half filled with fluid II
(the less dense phase). The fluids are flowing sufficiently slowly. Using only shell-balance method,
develop the equations for shear stress and velocity distributions in each layer. Also calculate the average
velocity in each layer. Find out the distance at which the shear stress is zero.
3 Oil is flowing down a vertical wall as a film of 1.7 mm thick. The oil density is 820 kg/m3 and viscosity 7+3
is 0.20 Pa.s. Calculate the average velocity and mass flow rate per unit width of the wall film. Take
proper assumptions while developing the momentum balance equation using only shell balance
approach.
