American School life

What is school like for students in the United States of

America? Jason talks about life in an American secondary
school.

The school year

The American school year isn’t very long. American students are very
lucky because there are many holidays in the school year. We have
two weeks for spring holiday, two weeks for Christmas holiday and
three months for summer holiday.

Classes
I don’t think that American school life is very difficult. Each student
has seven classes. Some of my classes aren’t very exciting, but I like
Maths and History. They are a lot of fun.

School rules
We have a lot of freedom at school. We don’t have to wear uniforms –
only students in private schools have to wear uniforms. But we must
be careful. There are some clothes and colours that we can’t wear
because gangs wear them. We can’t take personal stereos or
headphones to school and we can’t chew gum. Some students drive
to school because in Chicago people can drive when they are 16. But
not for long – next year people must be 18 to drive.
