- Assumed Background:
This Language Skills Development Course is a compulsory course for the English-majored students. As a second-year subject, it requires prior knowledge on the subject of ENGL222.
- Course Description: This course is designed to improve student’s English language proficiency to B2 level according to Common European Framework of Reference.

II. Learning Objectives


This skill-based integrated course aims at developing students’ language proficiency at B2 level.
In terms of reading, after successfully completing this course, students can:
o understand the details, the main idea and the structure of articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt stances or
viewpoints.
o understand writers' opinions, attitudes and purposes of articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt stances or
viewpoints.
o understand the meaning of words or phrases from the context.
In terms of writing, after successfully completing this course, students can produce coherent well-organized academic cause-effect/advantages & disadvantages essay of about 250 words.
Specifically, they can:
 use the conventions of the communicative task effectively to hold the target reader’s attention and communicate straightforward and complex ideas.
 use a variety of cohesive devices and organisational patterns.
 use a range of vocabulary, including less common lexis, appropriately and simple and complex grammatical forms with control and flexibility.

2. Assessment Details
Attendance: Regular attendance is a must. Anyone who is absent from class for over 20% of total time will not be eligible to take the end-of-term test.
On-going Assessment (30%)
A. Reading Mini-tests
- Type: During class
- Due date: Reading mini-tests 1 & 2 will take place in weeks 6 & 8 respectively.
- Time allowed: 30-40 minutes approximately
- Task description:
+ Part 1 (6 items – Multiple choice): Students are required to read a long text and answer 4-option MCQ.
+ Part 2 (6 items – Gapped text sentences): Students are required to insert sentences into their corresponding paragraphs.
+ Part 3 (10 items – Multiple matching): Students are required to match the information with the people/things mentioned in the text.
- B. Writing Assignments
- Type: During class
- Due date: Assigned by the teacher
- Task description: A writing assignment portfolio includes the 1st draft of writing (students are asked to write an essay on one of the given topics), a peer feedback form
which indicates peer evaluation and correction (the due date is assigned by teacher), and the 2nd draft (students rewrite the 1st one after getting their peers’ comment)
and the final draft (students are required to self-edit his/ her essay after receiving the peer feedback form and teacher’s feedback).
C. Vocabulary sheet
- Task description: Students are required to prepare a handwriting vocabulary sheet of at least 15 words/ phrases about the topics concerned in upcoming sessions. The
vocabulary could be collected from the course book (Gold first) or vocabulary books (English Collocation in Use and Vocabulary in Use). The vocabulary sheet might
be personally designed but must indicate the pronunciation of the new word/ phrase, its part of speech, its definition and its appearance in your own new sentence. The
vocabulary sheet must be on desk when the new lesson takes place.

End-of-term Test
- Type: Final exam
- Time allowed: 90 minutes approximately
- Task description:

V. Course Policies
- Items (for which no extension has been granted) submitted after the due date and time, incur a late submission penalty. The penalty is at the rate of 2 marks (per day) of the total
available marks for that particular piece of assessment.
- Students are required to go to class on time. If a student is late for class twice, he/ she is considered to be absent from class once.
- Every incomplete homework/ no homework assignment results in mark 0. Every 2 incomplete homework assignments results in the failing grade.
