Spelling Study tips

1. Read the list out loud—make sure your child understands how to
pronounce each one and understands the definition.
2. Apply any spelling rules to the words—point out how the rules are
working in this list. Choose some words and have them tell you how the rule
applies.
3. Suffixes/prefixes: Be sure your child can identify the root word. When
practicing, they can break down the word by spelling the root then the suffix
or spell the prefix then the root. Drill how to spell a prefix or suffix.
4. Practice! Try using one or more of these ideas; find what works for you!

Enter your list and and use the games to practice

Say/Spell/Say
Drill the list orally—say the word, spell the word, say the word, while looking
at the list.

Spelling Game (5 minute timer) (can also be done in partners if you

have more than one child)
Set a point goal. (see below)
Say the word to your child. He will write it while saying the letters he is
writing. If he makes an error, say “stop.” Show him the word so he can find
his error. Have him write it correctly and say it 3x correctly.

Continue the game, getting through as many words as you can in 5 minutes;
repeat the list if you run out of words and there is time left. Count up how
many words he did correctly in that time—2 points each. If he made the goal
you set, you could give a reward. (example: 15 minutes of screen time, extra
free time, a special snack etc. ) Or just make it fun—do parent versus child or
a sibling competition etc.
This will narrow down which words he really needs to study and keeps it
short, so it is not boring.

Pre-test
Give the list as a pretest, having him type or write the words. For any errors
that are made, have him look at the word to find the error. When they find
their error, it helps their memory for the next time. (versus you telling him
what the error was) Have him write any missed words 3x each at the end.

Write them! (bonus: improved penmanship!)

Have them write the list each day

Story time! (bonus: doubles as your creative writing practice)

Have them incorporate a set number of words in to a short story or poem.
