Content
Learning Outcomes [ASSURE (State Objectives)]
When unit fractions are given, fifth grade students will show at least 85% of them on the number line. Also,
they will sort them on number line.
When given the task about simplification and expansion of fractions, fifth grade students will interpret that
simplification and expansion will not change the value of a fraction and construct equivalent fractions.

Instructional Materials & Media [ASSURE (Select Strategies, Technology, Media and Materials)]
Kahoot, projection, smart board, magnetic number line, fraction cards, tablets, Powtoon, plastic plates,
scissors, and websites (Weebly and math learning center)

Learning-Teaching Methods [ASSURE (Select Strategies, Technology, Media and Materials)]

Cooperative learning, discovery learning, games and discussion.
Teaching Activities [ASSURE (Utilize Technology, Media, and Materials and Require Learner Participation)]
Activity 1: Kahoot
The purpose of this activity is to measure students’ prior knowledge about fractions. This activity consists of 5
questions with each question comes from 4th grade Fractions’ objectives.
Activity 2: Powtoon
The purpose of this activity is to introduce the topics of this week to students. This video is comprised of the
objectives about Fractions in 5th grade, and what are expected from students during this week. By using this
video, the teacher makes students interested in topics with the audio-visual aids and also prepare them for the
lesson.
Activity 3: Plate Activity
In this activity, the teacher makes students groups of 4. Then, the teacher gives plastic plates that are with
written different unit fractions each on them. Then, the teacher asks them to cut the plates appropriately
which are given below. The purpose of this activity is that the students will examine the size of the fractions
represented by appropriate models. Then, the teacher says them to compare and sort these fractions. Also,
the teacher expects them to discover equivalent fractions.
Activity 4: Magnetic Number Line Activity
The teacher will glue the previously prepared magnetic number line to the board. Then, the teacher asks each
student to come to the board and find fraction cards corresponds to the model which the teacher draws on the
smart board. Then, the students are expected to find and glue the correct places of these fractions on the
number line. This process is as shown below:

Individual Learning Activities Kahoot and Magnetic Number Line Activity

Group Learning Activities Plastic Plates Activity

Summary
The size of the fractions represented by appropriate models will be examined. Simplification and expansion will
not change the value of a fraction. Also, the course will include the creation of equivalent fractions. Fractional
models and conceptual studies will be introduced before proceeding to operational applications. The unit
fractions will be shown and sorted on number line.
Measurement & Evaluation
In mini quiz from Kahoot, the teacher assesses students according to their answers for each question.
Moreover, during Plate and Magnetic Number Line activities, the teacher will assess students by observation.

Explanation
The teacher will assess students by observations in each activity.
Explanation regarding to the implementation of the plan
When planning this course, we assumed that the students had sufficient technological tools and materials. We
assumed that they knew how to use the applications used in these activities, so we did not provide any
information about it. The flow of the lesson will be like this:
Teacher starts the lesson with a Kahoot game to measure students’ prior knowledge about fractions. Then, the
teacher reflects questions on the Kahoot on the board by projection. At the end of each question, the teacher
will explain the solution briefly. When this activity is over, the teacher shows a video from Powtoon in order to
inform students about the topics and objectives of this week. After that, the teacher makes them groups of 4.
Then, the teacher gives plastic plates that are with written different unit fractions each on them. Then, the
teacher asks them to cut the plates appropriately which we explained in a detailed way in the activity part.
The purpose of this activity is that the students will examine the size of the fractions represented by
appropriate models. Then, the teacher says them to compare and sort these fractions. Also, the teacher
expects them to discover equivalent fractions. For example, the students should discover that two 1/6
corresponds to 1/3 by putting pieces one on the top of the other. During this activity, the teacher will observe
the students and check whether they discover this fact or not. If there are some students who discovered this
fact, the teacher will ask them to explain how and what they found. After that, the teacher gives the definition
and properties of equivalent fractions. Then, the teacher shows them the equivalent fractions which are used in
this activity by using math learning center website as shown below:
Moreover, the teacher shows different equivalent fractions by using this website as shown below:

After giving adequate information and examples about equivalent fractions, the teacher proceeds to the topics
which is about displaying and sorting unit fractions on number line. After that, the teacher will draw some unit
fractions models on the smart board and puts the previously prepared fraction cards corresponding to these
models on the table. Also, the teacher will glue the previously prepared magnetic number line to the board.
Then, the teacher asks each student to come to the board and find fraction cards corresponds to the model
which the teacher draws on the smart board Then, the students are expected to find and glue the correct
places of these fractions on the number line. By doing so, the teacher asks the new student on the board to
compare his/her fraction with the previous fraction which is asked. In this way, the students will learn
representing the unit fractions as well as sorting them on number line.

Some Possible Drawbacks and Back-up Plans for Them:

Possible Drawback 1:
In Kahoot activity, there may be a problem with Internet connection or projection may not work or the
electricity maybe go out. Therefore, the game will not be played.
Back -up Plan for This Situation:
The teacher will write the questions from Kahoot game on the black board and asks the students to solve them
on their notebooks.
Possible Drawback 2:
In Powtoon activity, the video may not work because of the reasons we talked about Kahoot activity or there
may be a problem with Powtoon.
Back -up Plan for This Situation:
The teacher states what the students will learn and what are expected from them during this week orally.
Possible Drawback 3:
In Magnetic Number Line activity, electricity maybe gone.
Back -up Plan for This Situation:
The teacher draws the fractions models on the black board.
