Exercise 1
Consider the problem:

 4u = 0, (x, y) ∈ D,

(1)

 u C1 = 2x − 5y,

u C = 0,
2

where D denotes the annulus D = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : 4 < x2 + y 2 < 9}, ∂D = C1 ∪ C2 , C1 = {(x, y) ∈

R2 : x2 + y 2 = 4}, C2 = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : x2 + y 2 = 9}.
• Classify the problem (1) and discuss the uniqueness of solutions for this problem.
• Solve (1) by means of the Fourier method of separation of variables in polar coordinates,
namely for u(x, y) = v(ρ, θ).
• Write the obtained solution v(ρ, θ) in cartesian coordinates (x, y), namely write u(x, y), and
then comment on the obtained solution.
Justify all answers.
Hint: Laplacian in polar coordinates is given by
1 1
4v = vρρ + vρ + 2 vθθ .
ρ ρ
Exercise 2
Prove characteristic parallelogram law for the solution of the wave equation utt − c2 uxx = 0 and
then use it to solve the following initial–boundary value problem:

 utt − 16uxx = 0, x > 0, t > 0,

u(x, 0) = 3, x > 0,

ut (x, 0) = 0, x > 0,

u(0, t) = g(t), t > 0,
where 
3, if 0 < t ≤ 2,

g(t) =

0, if t > 2.

Draw the value of u(x, t) in the (x, t) plane and write the values u(x, t) as a function of x for any
fixed value of t > 0.
Justify all answers.
