PRACTICAL APPROACH TOWARDS MAINTENANCE

Venue : RHQ-Nagpur
Date : 21.12.2018

Ankit Prakash Vaishnao

Manager
765/400kV Kotra PS, Raigarh
Readiness for Maintenance activity
1. Prepare a Tool kit considering all types of connections you
will encounter during maintenance activities.
2. Keep appropriate quantity of AC or DC Fuses of appropriate
ratings in Tool kit
3. All types of Lugs with appropriate sizes should be available.
Crimping Tool to be used for every Lug connection.
4. Healthy and calibrated Digital Multimeters, Clamp meters.
5. Keep Crocodile clip connected small size cords at least 6
nos.
6. Always carry a Tester.
7. Know how to use Ferrule Printing Machines.
8. Keep As built Scheme if applicable
Key Maintenance areas -

1. Protection System 86

2. Healthiness of DC System 69

a. DC System – Operation of DC earth fault Relay

b. DC earth fault identification and removal (Use of DC Fault Locator Kit)
3. Substation Air Conditioning System 68

4. PLCC 84

5. LT Switchgear – DG (Relays and Auto operation scheme) 83

6. Maintenance of Test Kits

7. Spare Inventory
8. Fire Safety Equipment at vulnerable areas
Basics of Panel Maintenance
1. Check tightness of all TB’s and Relay terminals
2. Cleanliness of Panels. Holes anywhere in the panel should be
sealed.
3. Appropriate Dressing of Cables
4. No Lead to be kept disconnected and Non Insulated. Apply
electrical tape in such case.
5. No Ferrule to be handwritten. Use Ferrule Printer.
6. Check Panel Light and Heater healthiness.
Impact of DC Earth fault
DC Earth fault

1. DC system grounds can result when a conduction path is formed

from either the positive polarity of the system to earth ground or
the negative polarity to earth ground.
2. Water will often form a bond between the exposed conductor and earth
ground. As a result, the emergence of dc system grounds often tends to
increase during rainy seasons
General reasons for DC Earth fault

 Moisture in conduit, Junction boxes or Termination blocks

 Wire splices soaking in water
 Degraded cable or wire insulation caused by aging,
environmental conditions and constant abrasion from
vibration
 Sharp objects piercing cable and wire insulation
 Wires that have pulled out of their terminations and touch
ground or water.

As per norms current measuring element is kept with pickup setting of 3mA
Use of Digital Multimeter
Resistance and Continuity Measurements

It is important when measuring Resistance or Continuity, that

the circuit be de-energized or turned off.
Always check Voltage between the Test points before Continuity
measurement and Never Test continuity if Voltage is present
between Test points.

 It offers closed path through Multimeter which may be

responsible for Maloperation of Trip circuit
 It may damage the meter
