NARRATIVE REPORT ON 2019-2020

SCHOOL-BASED NATIONAL READING MONTH

I. INTRODUCTION
Indeed, the Philippine Education System is heading towards significant heights as it embraces
the Implementation of the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil- IRI). This is an initiative of
the Bureau of Learning Delivery, Department of Education that directly addressed its thrust to
make every pupil a reader, that anchored on the flagship program of the Department: “Every Child
A Reader Program”.
As an institution of learning a school need to challenge itself to prosper the love of reading in
all pupils. In accordance to DepEd Memorandum No. 158, s. 2019 San Isidro Elementary School
celebrated the National Reading Month last November 27-29, 2019 with the theme: “Magbasa’t
Umunlad”.
We can say that reading is one of the very important elements of education. Understanding what
we are reading is the key and is certainly the main point of teaching reading in a class.
According to the one of the authors of English Expressway Book; "Reading is fundamental to
function in today’s society, it is a vital skill in finding a good job and is important because it develops
one's mind. It is a magical thinking to believe Janet Emig’s (1983) Viewpoint of teaching that, " The
pupils learned because we teach", and one of the important skills that needs to be developed in
children is Reading, so that it can open up new worlds and enrich live.
II. TARGET OBJECTIVE

The Reading Month aims to:

a. inspire pupils to genuinely practice the love of reading in their journey for improvements;
b. activate and reinforce other skills such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar etc.; and
c. discover not only the usefulness but the pleasure and enjoyment of being able to read.

III. PARTICIPANTS

The School-Based Reading Month was collaboratively celebrated by the School Head,
the English Reading Team, Teacher Advisers, Parents, and pupils from Kinder to Grade Six
of San Isidro Elementary School, this school year 2019-2020.

IV. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENT

The school started the celebration by participating the nationwide synchronized story
reading time last November 27, 2019, 9:00 a.am. On the next two consecutive days, the
Reading Activities were held and facilitated in each classroom from Kinder to Grade Six.
Pupils from Kinder to Grade 3 led the parade of characters from different kinds of stories to
make the activities more exciting. Specifically, Kinder Pupils did the story telling challenge
with their respective and loving teachers. While all learners from Grade 1 to 3 were
encouraged to bring and share their own story books for children and enjoyed reading with
their classmates and teachers. Simultaneously, pupils from Grades 4-6 joined the activity,
“Help a reader, Be a Volunteer. Everyone has maximized the participation to a successful
event.

Through this celebration, we have developed interest, loyalty and perseverance to teach each pupil
to read in order to eradicate non-readers in each class. From all the experiences derived through

teaching reading, we can conclude that these experiences played a great help to the reading
teachers both personal and social development in teaching. To have fair treatment with pupils, one
can develop a wholesome personality and strengthen the good relationship being established with
them. By using creative and effective reading tools, the pupils’ attention were easily caught and
motivate to read. Teach with a smile, develop good rapport to children that has made them feel no
hesitation of approaching the reading teachers. Thus, encourage them to feel free to participate
reading activities.
