A. Definition
Present Perfect tense is a verb form used to express an action or situation that has started in the
pass and still continues until now or have been completed at given point in time in the past but
the effect still continues.

Her fantacy books have won multiple awards. The books have been sold more than 400 million
copies and translated into 67 languages. They have become the best-selling book series in
history.
J.K. Rowling has been married to Dr Neil Murray since 2001. They have had one daughter and
one son. But Joanne has also had one daughter from her previous marriage.
Joanne Kathleen Rowling has become so popular after writing Harry Potter. The success of her
book series has made her to be a billionaire author. She has received many honours and awards
2. Fractions
An extensive treatment of fractions appeared around 1600 B.C. in the Rhind Papyrus, which
contained the work of Egyptians mathematicians. The Egyptians did not expresse fractions as
ratios such as 2:5 or 2/5. They expressed ratios in unit fractions. What are unit fractions?
A unit fraction is a fraction that has a numerator of 1 and the denominator is a positive integer
For example, 1/2, 1/5, and 1/5 are unit fractions. The Egyptians would then write 2/5 as 1/3
+ 1/15. Of course, the Egyptians used their symbols to represent this fraction. 1/3 + 1/15 would
be represented as shown below:
Notice that all we care about is the man's feet. Feet pointing toward the direction of writing
means add. Otherwise, it means subtract. In this case, it is pointing towards the direction of
writing. Notice also that there is a shape that looks like an open mouth (the ellipse). It refers to a

The way we represent fractions today probably came from the Hindus. Around A.D. 630,
Brahmagupta would write the fraction two-fourths without the bar as

In the seventh century, the least common multiple was used extensively when adding and
subtracting fractions. Multiplication of fractions as we know it today stayed the same for
centuries. Division of fractions however, was carried out in a way that is completely different to
the way we perform this operation today. The first way was to look for a common denominator
4/2 ÷ 2/3 = 12/6 ÷ 4/6 = 12/4 = 3. The first way was to perform cross-multiplication
4 × 3 = 12 and 2 × 2 = 4, so 12/4 = 3. This concludes our brief history of fractions
B. Fractions are parts of numbers
Fractions look a little like division expressions, but they aren't problems to be solved. They are
a way of expressing an amount. Like numbers, fractions tell you how much you have of
something.
The names of the denominators are easy to make. Most of them have a “th” after the name of
number. Some are special ones are: half, third, fifth, eighth,nintth, and twelfth.
D. Kind of Fractions
We use periods in numbers. A period is called a decimal point. It tell us “decimal fractions”.
12.3 (twelve and three tenths). The word “and” is read for the decimal point. Each place in
anumber has a name. The names of decimal fractions are like the names of big numbers.

In this example, we have eight parts out of eight parts total. If the top number and the
bottom number of a fraction are the same, then the fraction is equal to 1. That's because you have
every part of the fraction, or one whole thing. This is sometimes known as a whole fraction.
