Mr. Uday Khemka, Co-Founder & Vice Chairman, SUN Mobility & Vice Chairman, SUN Group

Uday Khemka is the Vice Chairman of the SUN Group of companies and an ardent advocate of “New”
and Renewable energy. He has almost 30 years of entrepreneurial and investment experience in varied
emerging markets, including India. His passion for New energy (including distributed renewable energy,
energy storage and electric mobility) led him to set up SUN New Energy Holdings, an affiliate of his
family group company, the SUN Group, which has partnered with Virya Mobility 5.0 (led by Chetan
Maini, founder of India’s first electric car Reva) to form SUN Mobility.

The legacy of SUN Group


SUN Group is a leading principal investor and private equity fund manager in India and other emerging
and transforming markets. The Group has been active in areas such as Aerospace, Oil & Gas, Mining,
Real Estate, Infrastructure, Food & Beverage, Technology and Renewable Energy.

SUN Group is a diversified global investment group, with investments in India, CIS countries and other
emerging markets. The founding shareholders of the group are part of an Indian business family that
has been active in India for over a hundred years and internationally for over seventy years. The group
has been active in diverse business segments including Food and Beverages, Oil and Gas, Mining, Real
Estate, Infrastructure, Aerospace, Technology, and Renewable Energy. In India, SUN helped establish
the Private-Equity sector through a series of successful PE franchises which have invested over $6
billion across themes. The Group established one of the country’s first generation solar projects in
2011 and is now partnered with Japan’s leading solar investor / developer, ORIX Corporation, in SUN
Renewables which aims to be the leading distributed solar energy investor and developer in India.

The Beginning
Prior to SUN Group, Uday worked with Credit Suisse First Boston, and Morgan Stanley in London and
New York. He went on to establish and lead Morgan Stanley’s investment banking operation in India in
the early 1990s and has been a pioneer in the field of social impact funding in the country.

Since 1993, Uday has been deeply involved in the SUN Group’s entrepreneurial and principal
investment activities in the food and beverage, natural resource, and real estate sectors. Now he is
committed to building and developing the company’s clean energy and clean technology platforms.

Since 1996, Uday has also co-led SUN Group’s investment management activities and participated in
the creation of focussed fund franchises in the brand’s core emerging markets. Platforms established
by SUN Group have mobilised and invested over $6bn in Indian portfolio companies since 1999.
In 1992 Uday attended the Earth Summit (COP 1) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and has ever since led the
Nand and Jeet Khemka Foundation policy initiative on Climate Change and New Energy Finance and
deployment in India and around the world.

In 1998, he also founded - Youthreach, an NGO, whose mission was to galvanize young business leaders
in India to take ownership of challenges in the community. Uday’s philanthropic activities include
driving change in issues concerning the environment, sustainable rural development, microfinance,
children and youth.

An expert in the new energy sector for over a decade, Uday has been the Chairman of the Clean Energy
Finance Forum, and the Solar Rooftop Policy Coalition and is a Director of The Climate Group, India.
Uday is on the Board of Governors of the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad, the Board of The
Synergos Institute in New York. In 2005, Uday was elected as a Young Global Leader at the World
Economic Forum in Davos. Educated at Eton College, he received his Undergraduate and Master’s
degree at Cambridge University and received an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School
(Baker Scholar).
