GENERAL TITLE

THE PURPOSEFUL EDGE: LAKE INTERFACE AND TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

A natural landscape—aimed at and transformed for recreational activity near a metro station.
RESEARCH PROPOSITION

L ANDSCAPE URBANISM

It is a theory of urban planning arguing that the best way to organize cities is
through the design of the city's landscape, rather than the design of its buildings.
RESEARCH PROPOSITION

TEN CHARACTERISTICS

Tom Turner summarized the ten characteristics of landscape urbanism in the book Landscape design history and theory: landscape
architecture and garden design origins:
1-Broad scale context: Landscape urbanism does not belong to a specific scale. It can be considered in small or large-scale projects.
2-Landscape is a context which contains architecture and civil engineering.
3-Landscape is seen as a third machinery arm that makes a connection between its components.
4-LU projects can provide the opportunity of increasing the social interactions.
5-Function is the most significant concern in LU machine, which gives the appearance of a project less importance.
6-LU discovers the potentials and opportunities in landscapes.
7-The infrastructure are highlighted in LU projects.
8-LU projects will develop the interrelationship between natural and engineered systems.
9-LU will break the boundary between the landscape and the city and will organize them as one.
10-The answer to the projects which are complex or have ecological concentrations, is landscape urbanism
RESEARCH QUESTIONS / AREAS

• How the landscape urbanism will play its role in Transit Oriented Development?
Landscape urbanism is a theory of urban planning arguing that the best way to organize cities is through the design of
the city's landscape, rather than the design of its buildings.

• How can an urban transportation do justice to the natural ecosystem present in and around a water body?

• what are the necessary interfaces required between the urban and the recreational activities through landscape?
PROJECT : AS A VEHICLE OF DEMONSTRATION

A WALK ALONG THE LAKE- TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT

Lakes are the lungs of natural ecosystems and perform several functions. Urban Lakes are however, only a subset of all fresh
water bodies. The lakes have inherent quality of storing and maintaining it for a much larger period than other wetlands. Lakes
sustain all life and perform useful functions in the maintenance of ecological balance. Interfacing between land and water systems,
they are highly productive and biologically rich ecosystems, and are also the most endangered. It is necessary to plan Environment
Management policies which are indigenous to that particular piece of land. Efforts to conserve these fragile areas and develop
them to promote as eco -tourism should be undertaken to make people aware and make them sensitive towards environment and
protect of our natural resources keeping urban development in mind.
SITE & CONTEXT , BACKGROUND

Nagpur being the fastest growing city

in terms of development and
population, has initiated the need of
Metro rail for easy commute and the
project aims to reduce the number of
vehicles that ply on roads and also
bring down air pollution in the city.

The city is going to have 11 metro

stations with a total route length
of 13.5 kilometers (8.4 mi) which are
planned near dense localities,
business centers, MIHAN, markets and
lakes.

It connects east west and north south,

SITABULDI being the junction.
SITE & CONTEXT , BACKGROUND

The Nagpur metro rail network will be spread

across a length of about 38.21 km. It will be
functional on two corridors, namely the North-
South Corridor and the East-West Corridor.
The east west corridor passes through
“AMBAZARI LAKE”.
SITE & CONTEXT , BACKGROUND

The proposal-Maharashtra
Government will hand over 44-acre
land of Ambazari lake belonging to
Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC)
to Maharashtra Tourism
Development Corporation (MTDC) to
develop it as best tourist destination
at the state level and also create
direct and indirect employment.

As per the latest plan (2018), the

MTDC will develop a club house,
Ambazari Lake
restaurant and huts on Ambazari
land. It will also start-
-water sports facilities in the lake
-amusement rides,
-construct an amphitheater
-It will also give the garden a facelift.
-The lake is spread over an area of 20
acres.
-Earlier, the civic body had planned
to develop the garden and lake on
the lines of Ramoji film city in
Hyderabad. Then it was changed to
Swami Vivekananda Smarak Area under NMC given to Metro
Crazy castle
development project.

commercial ventures.
Already, the NMC had installed
statue of Swami Vivekanand near
overflow point of Ambazari lake
while Nagpur Metro Rail had planned
a sky-walk on Ambazari

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

• To formulate policies and give a proposed plan to NMC for

– the metro development project at Ambazari station and the lake precincts (which come under Maha metro
area)
– Redevelopment of the park with the given requirements.
– To propose an interface between build and natural environment.
