NEWS RELEASE

SHOOTING INCIDENT AT THE BABA YARA SPORTS STADIUM

1. The Ashanti Regional Police Command has commenced investigation into the

unfortunate shooting incident at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium that left one person

injured on Sunday 12th January, 2020.

2. The incident occurred when supporters of Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC went on rampage

after their league match against Brekum Chelsea FC at the Stadium, damaging some

Police Vehicles and injuring some Police Officers with stones that were pelted at the

Police.

3. It was during this period that a Police Officer was alleged to have shot rubber bullets into

the crowd, injuring one of the Fans in the face. The injured person is currently on

admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital receiving treatment and is in stable

condition.

4. The Command takes a serious view of the incident and has subsequently commenced

investigation into the action of the Police Officer involved in the shooting. The officer

has been interdicted on the instruction of the Regional Commander, pending

investigation.
5. The Command will also like to reiterate its position on the need for professionalism of all

persons involved in ensuring the safety of persons at public events, especially at the

Stadium

6. The Command sympathizes with the injured person’s family and wish the injured a

speedy recovery.
