$20 or $30 apiece, even in the depressed marketplace setting of

to add classic commemorative coins to their collections. Sure,
nobody can say whether or not commemorative coin prices have
finally bottomed out. But numismatists have a chance to add
some incredible gem-quality commems for prices that are but a

1820 Coronet Portrait Large Cent Graded Mint State-64 Brown
This coin is not considered to be rare because of the John Randall Hoard of 1816 to 1820 large cents, discovered
beneath a Southern railroad station platform in 1868. The large cents of 1820 are considered the highest quality
large cents due to their excellent planchet quality and the fact that many were so meticulously preserved and
managed to fortuitously escape injury. These coins will soon be 200 years old, and many look like they were just minted. A
lustrous MS-64 can be purchased for about $1,250, and the MS-65 examples can be found for slightly less than $2,000.

Nickel Three-Cent Pieces, 1879-1889, Graded Proof-66 and Proof-67
Three-cent nickels are intriguing coins that are products of the Reconstruction period after the Civil War.
The business strikes were manufactured beginning in 1865, but only proofs were issued in 1877 and 1878. From
1879 through 1889, proofs and business strikes were manufactured, with 1886 and the 1887/6 overdate being
proof-only years. Some of the proofs from 1879 through 1889 are spectacularly beautiful and selling for about an 80% dis-
count from their historic highs. The dates that are most smartly priced are proof and cameo proof examples of 1879, 1880,
1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1886, 1888, and 1889. I also like 1885 (the cameo proof 67 can be pricey) and 1887 (the proof 67 and
cameo proof 67 can be pricey). Considering that Gem Proof examples of these coins on the lower end of the smart-priced
spectrum can retail from $850 to $1,850, this makes them an easy pick for my favorite nickel coinage selection.

Draped Bust Portrait with Heraldic Eagle on Reverse Dollar (1798-1803)
Very Fine-20 through -35. It’s hard to beat the appeal of a U.S. coin dated in the 1700s. And a dollar was big
in the 1700s, as it was the basis of the monetary system, but too high an amount to be practical in the form
of a single coin. As a result, silver dollars were minted sparingly during the first decade or so of U.S. coinage
– and not at all for more than three decades after. Bust dollars have always been popular with collectors because of their
large diameter and many interesting varieties. I remember marveling at these awesome coins as a teenager, and I still get
excited when I see an original coin with pristine, undamaged surfaces. A little patience will be required, but they’re worth
the wait. Most dates and varieties can be found in the $2,750 to $3,250 price range.

Walking Liberty Halves, 1939-1942, Proof-67
A.A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty half dollar is considered by many to be our most attractive silver coin.
The U.S. Mint even thinks so because in 1986 it selected the obverse from the Walking Liberty half for the
obverse of the American Eagle silver bullion coin. Proof-67 examples of the half dollar dated 1939-1942
can be purchased in the $800 range quite readily. I remember when they traded for over $3,000 per coin, and I couldn’t
keep them in stock as a coin dealer. It would only take an investment of about $750,000 to buy every Proof-67 CAC

These coins bear a design of extraordinary beauty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, considered by many
to be the quintessential sculptor of his time. The Saint-Gaudens design was chosen by the Mint for the gold
American Eagle bullion coin in 1986, a powerful statement that shows that even today our government considers this design
to be the very best for a gold coin. Gem MS-65 examples can be purchased for slightly over $2,000, but it will require a little
patience. These coins are incredibly beautiful and popular, and, as a kicker, contain nearly one ounce of gold. In the late
1980s, these coins traded for $4,000 each when gold bullion was about $400 an ounce. Gold has tripled since then, and the
price of these popular Gem beauties has been cut in half. •

COINAGE MARCH 59
T
here are some great opportunities as well as
areas for caution for collectors and investors
in Bust coinage. I know I’m supposed to write
about the “gotta-have” coins. But in identifying
those specimens of value appreciation promise, I
came across others where it isn’t so clear that they will
soon appreciate. So you might not have to have them, even
though at first glance you might want them.
I have been collecting Bust coins for over 30 years and devel-
oped a deep passion for U.S. Bust silver coinage, specifically Bust
half dimes and dimes. I attend local, regional, and national coin
shows and follow auctions tracking these coins and carefully fol- 1792 half
lowing their trends. Also, I communicate regularly with collectors dime.
and dealers, and I carefully keep track of their observations and
experiences.
So after synthesizing all of this information, here are my “gotta
haves” and “not haves” in Bust half dimes.
Bust half dimes were minted from 1792 through 1837, and they
had three very different designs. The first year for half dimes was
1792, and these coins are referred to as “half dismes.” For some
numismatists, these coins are considered to be pattern coins,
while other collectors believe that these coins should be consid-
ered part of the Bust half dime series. Either way, the 1792 half
disme is a coin widely appreciated by investors and collectors.
It is estimated that only 200 to 300 examples exist; so they are
not commonly collected but widely appreciated. Also, these half
dismes are closely tied to the U.S. beginnings. Most of these coins
exist in circulated condition, and when offered for sale don’t stay
on the market for long periods of time. Based on estimates, there
are fewer than 40 known examples in uncirculated condition, and
they trade at $200,00 and more.
The 1792 half disme should see a slight increase in value for
those coins graded Good to Extremely Fine. For those uncirculat-
ed examples, I expect them to be flat in price unless they are very
attractively toned, making them high in eye appeal. Examples
that meet the high in eye appeal standard could increase in price 1800 Draped
by 5% over the next couple of years. Those examples are highly Bust half

sought by collectors and investors whenever offered and typically
attract attention.
The early half dimes were minted from 1794 until 1805 and had
three different types: 1794 and 1795, referred to as the Flowing
Hair design; 1796 and 1797, referred to as the Draped Bust Small
Eagle reverse; and 1800 to 1805, referred to as the Draped Bust
Heraldic Eagle reverse. These early half dimes are collected by
investors, type collectors, and half dimes specialists. 1802 is the
key date of this series, and it is offered very rarely. The half dime
specialists are truly dedicated to collecting half dimes and are the
foundation of this series. Besides these specialists, most investors
and type collectors acquire one example from any of these groups.
Most half dimes dated from 1794 to 1805 are cleaned and not

attractively toned. For the last several years, these half dimes have
slowly decreased in value. Also, there exists a good number of
examples of these coins in all grades to satisfy demand. The only
exception is the 1802, which will attract attention when offered.
As for the values of the 1794 to 1805 half dimes, I expect a very
slow increase in value in all grades. However, only those that are
not cleaned and reflect even wear will achieve this growth. Any
examples that are harshly cleaned and damaged will continue
their slow downward spiral.
Capped Bust half dimes were minted from 1829 until 1837
and have only one design. The Capped Bust half dimes are fairly
easy to collect. There are many dedicated Capped Bust half

experience a very slow increase in value in grades from Almost
Uncirculated and higher. Also, very rare die marriages (rarity

area that I expect can offer a nice appreciation in price are
those Capped Bust half dimes ranging in grades from Almost
Uncirculated through Gem Uncirculated that are very high in
eye appeal and sport gorgeous toning. Further, some of them
might be scarcer die marriages that have not been attributed.
For those examples offered in auction or by dealers
without much fanfare, collectors can cherry-
pick these coins and achieve a handsome,
quick return ranging from 10% to
20%. Those are coins you should
buy instantly.
