    Preterm premature rupture of membranes, or PROM, can be caused by multiple pregnancies, cervical incompetence, bleeding, previous preterm labor, smoking, infections, and excess amniotic fluid. The exact cause is often unknown but it involves an increase in local cytokines that activate an inflammatory cascade, disrupting proteins in the amnion and accelerating membrane weakening until the amnion ruptures. PROM can be detected by a fern leaf crystal pattern in amniotic fluid on a glass slide, leakage of fluid through the cervix, or a blue color change with nitrazine paper indicating the fluid's high pH level.
