PERSONAL NOTE
With the New Year comes the opportunity for new approaches. With this catalogue I am
switching to offering e-catalogues only. I regret this, but the economics dictate that I
really must change my habits and catch up with the modern world.
It is a sad day.
To brighten the mood, however, I would draw customers’ attention to the fact that I am
offering 20% discount on all successful orders over £75 from this catalogue.
Later in the coming year, hopefully February, probably March, I am having published
a book of my poems that have been written, in the main, in memory of my daughter
who died in September 2017. The book is called Poppy and other poems of grief and
celebration. It will have cover illustrations by her sister Olivia. It is being published in
America by Alyscamps Press and will have within it over 50 poems.
I am not looking to sell the book as such, but hope that any who wish to receive it might
offer a modest donation towards postage and the production costs (some of which I am
being asked to bear) after which all profits will be given to Martlets Hospice in Hove,
near Brighton, where Poppy was so tenderly looked after during her last weeks.
While there are some sad poems in the book there are also universal threads of hope,
humour and re-integration with what is and has been.
If anyone is interested in receiving a copy of the book please just send me an email, with
your name and address. I shall then send you a copy when it is out. Please don’t send any
donation, if at all, until you have received the book as I would like you to see what you
are donating for.
Writing the poems has been my salvation, I have to admit. However I do hope the book
as a whole is sufficiently universal to have some meaning and understanding for what
goes on within the human heart and spirit when confronted with the deepest imaginable
loss. The few people who have read the poems seem to think so, which I find gratifying.
Now I have dared to put my head above the parapet I will duck down again and
recommend this large catalogue to you. Our bookshop Books Beyond Words will be
open every Thursday through Saturday (10 – 5) during January, February and March.
We will open on Wednesdays, also, from 3rd April.
If in the neighbourhood I can normally be found in the shop myself on Thursdays. My
assistant Paul, as often as not, will be behind the desk otherwise. We have Open Mic
Poetry evenings, starting at 7.00pm, every first Thursday of the month throughout the
year. These are proving more and more popular. I will end by wishing and hoping that
everyone has a good, upbeat New Year! JULIAN NANGLE
