GENERAL LUBRICATION SYSTEMS
• Wet end

– Processes - pulp preparation, paper forming and paper pressing

– Peak lubricant temperatures 60°C

– Until now conventional EP mineral oil used

– Higher speeds have necessitated improved oil performance

• Dry end

– Steam temperature 150-180°C through the rolls

– Bearing temperatures 110°C

• Calendar Section

– Skin temperature of paper 200°C

– Heat transfer fluid used to heat rollers (230-280°C)

– Some OEM's recommend separate synthetic fluid

• Generally there is a move towards synthetic/Group II fluids for performance

THE WET END

• The wet end is where the pulp from the pulping plant is formed into sheets.

• At this stage the paper is 99% water.

• The sheet is then squeezed between rollers to remove as much water as possible
before moving to the dryer section or dry end.

• The lubricating oil in this end is used to lubricate the bearings and gears of the
rollers and also hydraulic systems.

• Although the temperature conditions may not put much stress on the oil, this end
of the machine is extremely wet and mixing of the oil and water can occur.

THE DRY END
• The paper sheet from the wet end is fed into the dry end where it is
pressed between heated rollers to remove the remainder of the water.

• This end of the paper machine is very hot and is kept covered to maintain
the heat.

• The oil in this section is also used to lubricate the bearings and gears of
the rollers and also hydraulic systems.

• High temperatures in this section mean that the oil has to be very
oxidation stable even in the presence of yellow metals which are used in
the bearings. Corrosion of these metals by the oil also has to be
considered.

AIR RELEASE

Good air release properties are critical to ensure proper lubrication. As

the amount of fluid decreases in today's paper machines, the time to release
air is shortened strengthening the importance of rapid air release.
FAG requirements. DIN 51381, T 50C. Max 40 minutes.
