searching using alternative terms if
necessary.

differences, coping styles,

Finding your given references
‡ Check Subject Materials Online, using your
unit code (PSS110) or just keywords e.g.
author/title. Your lecturer may also have put the
links on Blackboard.

‡ If not, one way is to search the Library by journal

name using the Online Journals link to see if
we hold the year and volume number, either on
the shelves or online

So why use databases?
‡ They are convenient to use
‡ They allow you to search through hundreds of
journal titles and issues simultaneously
‡ Usually discipline-based: business, law,
computer science, psychology etc.
‡ Updated regularly
‡ The articles they contain provide the main form
of primary source material and your lecturers
expect you to use them

27

They contain scholarly, peer reviewed articles, books chapters, conference papers

databases:

online journals that Swinburne
subscribes to.

searching other resources.

Advanced Search
‡ Advanced search allows you to really
control the searching process to
increase the relevance of your results

Google Scholar (GS) has recently changed the linking policy to our full text articles.

In the past, GS harvested our local holdings and displayed links from their search
results based on the local holdings. As from June this year (2010), GS is no longer
harvesting the institution's holdings and will simply display the general full textlinks
based on the subscription status. This can be inaccurate and confusing to users
because in most cases we don't subscribe to a complete run of full text in a journal.
Our advice to users is to check with the Library for the availability of full text if
you can't access an article from a link in Google Scholar.

Google scholar provides a simple way to search for scholarly material on the web,
and aims to sort articles the way researchers do. From one place, you can search
across many disciplines and sources; peer reviewed papers, theses, abstracts and
articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories,
universities and other scholarly organisations.
Citing correctly
