Assignment Topic: The relations
between rumination, reflection and
gender
This is the first of two written assignments for this unit.
The second assignment will build on the knowledge and
skills developed in this first assignment, i.e.:
Read and critically evaluate peer-reviewed journal
articles;
Find research articles through the library systems;
Write in APA format;
Learn to use APA format citations and references;
Present data in APA format tables.
Filling in the gaps
Before you start searching, make sure you read
any references provided by your lecturers. Some
of these are linked from your Blackboard home

Or
Click on the Online Journals

periodical title there.
There are lots of ways you can find the full text of an article, if we subscribe to it.
These are just a few of them.
They will all be demonstrated in turn:
As above ± just type in the title of the periodical (or journal) straight into the
search box
Use the Search the Library to do an advanced search by exact title (next

So why use databases?
They are convenient to use
They allow you to search through hundreds of
journal titles and issues simultaneously
Usually discipline-based: business, law,
computer science, psychology etc.
Updated regularly
The articles they contain provide the main form
of primary source material and your lecturers
expect you to use them
27
They contain scholarly, peer reviewed articles, books chapters, conference papers

Google Scholar (GS) has recently changed the linking policy to our full text articles.
In the past, GS harvested our local holdings and displayed links from their search
results based on the local holdings. As from June this year (2010), GS is no longer
harvesting the institution's holdings and will simply display the general full textlinks
based on the subscription status. This can be inaccurate and confusing to users
because in most cases we don't subscribe to a complete run of full text in a journal.
Our advice to users is to check with the Library for the availability of full text if
you can't access an article from a link in Google Scholar.

Google scholar provides a simple way to search for scholarly material on the web,
and aims to sort articles the way researchers do. From one place, you can search
across many disciplines and sources; peer reviewed papers, theses, abstracts and
articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories,
universities and other scholarly organisations.
Citing correctly
Remember to cite using APA style, found in
