Introduction

Reading is about decoding and understanding printed speech. It involves


listening and looking at letters and saying (reading) the sounds and words of the
printed letters.

Young children need to develop fundamental literacy skills, such as alphabet


knowledge, phonological (sound) awareness, letter recognition, print awareness
and print motivation to become successful readers.
Fluency in oral reading is almost entirely dependent upon rapid word recognition.
Lack of fluency has a negative impact on comprehension of printed material.

This workbook provides practical ways for teachers and parents to prepare
children for learning to read by building up concepts of language, decoding and
phonological awareness. The activities help to focus the child’s attention to print.
The aim is to motivate the emergent reader to find pleasure in reading. The
activities guide the beginner reader through simple steps to read words with
speed and proper expression. The words are paired with meaningful pictures to
assist the automatic recall of words and efficient decoding of the printed
information.

Language skills play an important role in text comprehension. Vocabulary,


receptive language and verbal fluency are the prerequisites for fluent automatic
reading. Phonological short term memory and automatic recall, the ability to
imitate phonic patterns, visual and phonic discrimination are all necessary
ingredients for fluent reading.

The vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension are closely related.


Frequent exposure to print contributes to the development of richer vocabulary
and general knowledge, which in turn contributes to the development of more
advanced reading skills.

When whole words are recognised as quickly as are individual letters, than the
automatic word recognition reaches a stage when the words seem to leap off the
page and enter the consciousness without a noticeable effort or strategy.

This workbook program gives the teacher/parent and a child a choice of


strategies to work with -

Read the words (with help of pictures)


Join the matching words (pictures)
Cut out and glue the matching pairs
Use the LUK box to find and match the words; find the correct places in the
LUK box to put the tile on

The activities do not require writing so that the tasks could be performed with
undivided attention to visual discrimination, recall and comprehension of
printed words. Writing often distracts the young reader from decoding the
print fluently and accurately.

Using the LUK box keeps the children’s focus on reading and matching
words and pictures without putting an effort on pencil skills.

A big advantage of the LUK system is that the student can work
independently, check his answers and correct his mistakes.

The students like LUK, they like to work with the tiles, searching for the
numbers and looking forward to be rewarded by a pattern. They think of
LUK as a game.
The LUK system and this workbook employs a multisensory strategy -
VISUAL
Sorting out the 12 tiles and putting them in sequence from 1 to 12 on the
blank squares in the lid of the LUK box
Taking tile by tile and placing them gradually next to the picture/word,
noticing the code number next to the picture/word
Reading the word or picture
Finding the matching/word/picture
Looking for that particular number in the LUK box and placing the tile on
that number
When finished and all tiles are placed on the correct numbers in the LUK
box a geometrical pattern is formed by the back of the tiles
Colouring the matching pattern on each page

Listening to guiding instructions
Hearing the words said by the teacher and by the student himself

KINAESTHETIC
Handling the tiles
Gradually crossing out the answers (matching picture/words)

Mini LUK Self Checking System

The lid of the Mini LUK tray (box) is divided into 12 blank squares, the base is
divided into 12 numbered squares. There are 12 numbered tiles to work with.

How to use the Mini LUK System.


Step 1.
Place the 12 tiles in sequence from 1 to 12 into the blank 1 2 3 4 5 6
squares on the lid of the Mini LUK box.

Choose your worksheet (page).

Step 3.
Pick up tile number 1 and place it under the picture with the number “1”.
Example page 1: 1 Read the word and look in the
answer column for the identical picture and word. Next to 2 4 5 6
the word is a number. Remember that number and find 7 8 9 10 11 12
that number in the base of the LUK box. When you find

that number, put the tile number 1 on that number. Then

take tile number 2 and place that tile under the picture
number “2” 2 Read the word and look for the
identical word in the answer column. What number is next to the word/picture?
Remember the number and look for that number in the LUK box. When you find
that number, put the tile number 2 on it. Take the tile number 3 and repeat
the procedure until you have all tiles in the base of the LUK box.

Step 4.
The tiles are in place, the task is accomplished. Close the lid
and turn the LUK box over sideways. Open the lid and
a pattern will appear.

Step 5.
Match the pattern in the box with the pattern on the bottom of the
page. If the patterns match, well done! You have not made a single
mistake! If the pattern is not quite correct, but is recognisable, you
have still done a good job.
