Department of Education Region IV-A ( CALABARZON) concluded the 2019
CALABARZON English Language Conference (CELCON), a training-workshop on
Pedagogy, critical content, issues and practices in second language teaching and learning,
at the Queen Margarette Hotel, Domoit, Lucena city on November 21-23.
The event, entitled “Raising the Bar on Second Language Teaching in CALABARZON:
Challenges Opportunities and Implications,” was attended by the education program
supervisors of all the divisions together with the selected elementary and secondary
teachers from various public schools in the region IV-A.
Dr. Jonathan S. Cadavido, regional education program supervisor in English and Campus
Journalism, spearheaded the seminar-workshop , and was facilitated by the competent
plenary speakers together with the members of the technical working group composed
mostly of master teachers from DepEd Laguna and Quezon.
Wrapping up the three-day seminar was the showcase of the diversified best teaching
practices among the selected elementary and secondary teachers in the demonstration
teaching.
Realyn F. Belen, an elementary teacher of Sta. Filomena Integrated School, and Marionel
U. Briz, a secondary teacher from San Pablo City Integrated High School, were both
recognized on their achievement for being hailed as second and third places respectively
as the best oral research presenters during the 2019 CALABARZON English Language
Conference (CELCON). Mam Belen’s action research entitled “Use of Mnemonics
Technique To Increase Vocabulary Development And Improve Student’s Spelling In
English “ aimed not only to describe the implementation of mnemonics technique to
increase vocabulary and spelling ability in English but also to encourage English teachers
to use mnemonics in teaching process for the pupils to have better understanding in
vocabulary and spelling ability. On the other hand, Sir Briz’s action research which
focused on explicit genre in teaching and authentic literacy experiences and its significant
effects on reading comprehension and reading attitude among grade 10 students also
gained distinction to the panelists. The said study did not only explore the effects of
explicit genre and implicit teaching of genre through authentic literacy experiences on the
development of comprehension of informational text but also the academic texts and
recreational reading attitude among the selected grade ten students of San Pablo City
Integrated High School, Division of San Pablo City.
Meanwhile, another delegate from the division also bagged an award for being one of the
best demonstration teachers. Utilizing cooperative learning approach in 4As instructional
method and providing the class with innovative teaching methodologies, Mam Julie Anna
C. Pansoy made an impressive demo teaching on the topic, “ Pointing Out the
Distinguishing Features of a Poem.”
The Division of San Pablo City congratulated all the winners for bringing honor to the
division and for coming up with quality studies anchored on English curriculum
development employing continuous improvement methodology with unique and new
interventions to be implemented in the school, district or division level.
One significant aspect of this seminar-workshop was that it was an avenue to formulate
and develop timely, relevant and doable classroom action research that respond to the
pressing problems among language teachers. With the joint effort of everyone, the
participants will try out what they learned in their respective classes.
The program ended with Dr. Cadavido giving challenge to all delegates, sharing
testimonies, acknowledgements and giving of certificates .
