1 SHALLOW SOIL IMPROVEMENT

1.1.1.1 OVER EXCAVATION AND REPLACEMENT
Over excavation and replacement is one of the traditionally but still commonly used ground improvement
methods in practice. The basic concept of this method is to remove a problematic geomaterial and replace it
with nonproblematic fill. Replacing fills are rock, gravel, and sand.

Process:
The process of over excavation in soft and very compressible soils is quick, fast (not time consuming) and
reliable. It simply consists in excavating and replacing the excavated material with good embankment fill.
Advantages:
Proven technology. Should achieve a good bearing capacity using a standard embankment construction on a
sound layer. Limited consolidation and settlement over the lifetime of the embankment. No additional time
required for surcharge effects.
Applicability according to our project:
This soil improvement technique was adopted in areas with a thickness of soil needed to be replaced am
maximum 4.0m depth and a medium high embankment.
