By Matilda Charles - Possible Heart Attack? Every Minute Counts
There’s one thing that seniors haven’t gotten better at over the decades,
and it can be deadly: We delay too long in getting help if we suspect we or
someone we love is having a heart attack.
In a study of more than 104,000 heart-attack patients reported in Archives
of Internal medicine, researchers compared the time it took to receive care
with the rate of mortality from heart attack. The average time of delay in
going to the hospital was 2.6 hours.
There are two types of heart attack: STEMI and non-STEMI. The STEMI
portion means “ST segment elevation myocardial infarction,” wich is
when a coronary artery becomes blocked by a clot and the heart sustains
damage. Minutes count when it comes to getting care.
The difficulty, researchers said, is that the patient can’t tell if he or she is
having one type or the other. Only by getting to the hopital quickly and
being hooked up to an electrocardiogram machine can it be determined.
Quite often the symptoms of heart attack are initially mild.
Rule of thumb if you experience any symptoms - such as shortness of
breath or discomfort in the chest or any other upper-body arer - is to call
for help within five minutes.

paramedics arrive (faster than having someone drive you to the hospital),
but once you get to the emergency room, if you’re brought in by

Keep the Home Fires Burning
The holidays can be tough on the families of service members who
are deployed. Here are some ways you can help make their holidays a
little brighter:
If you live near a military base, call its family support services. Tell
them you’d like to help with toys, food boxes or anything else. You can
help financially by donating a Walmart gift card so the at-home parent
can buy what the family needs, paying a utility bill, donating a phone
card and more. If you’re so inclined (and have the right equipment),
volunteer to play Santa for a group of little kids.
Volunteer at any location where they collect, pack and deliver toys
for military kids. Most of these programs also include a food box.
If you’re in a veterans service organization, perhaps the best thing you
can do for the parents left behind is to host a party for the kids and give
the parent a few free hours.
If you know a parent who is struggling with the absence of the
family’s service member, make sure she (and it usually is a she) has
access to information she needs. Ask family support services at the
nearest base what help is available, and make sure she knows about it.
Programs are called by various names depending on the military branch,
but they all involve help with a wide variety of services, such as
financial help for mortgage, car payment, phone bill, support groups and
more.

A: Dolls don’t have to be “ancient” to be valuable. Think early
Barbies. There are several excellent reference books about dolls and
their values. I especially like 200 Years of Dolls by Dawn Herlocher
(Krause, $29.99), and the Blue Book: Dolls and Values by Jan Foulke
(Hobby House Press). Most dolls have markings that identify the maker.
When you have that piece of information, you can date your doll and

another sign. So are disturbances
of vision. None lasts long, but they
are quite significant and serious
warnings.

choose to incorporate
music into their wedding
ceremony and reception. A
wedding without music
would seem strange,
wouldn’t it?
Music may be recorded
or live. Some couples hire
a DJ to play recorded
music, while others choose
to have CDs played over a
stereo system at the
venue. Some couples hire a
band or orchestra, while
others hire a singer or
guitarist to perform
acoustically. For many
couples, acoustic music
adds a unique element to
their wedding. If this is the
route you choose, here are
some tips for hiring a
musician.
You should start by
selecting the songs you
want to have played at
your wedding. This will
give you some idea as to
the genre, which, in turn,
will give you some idea as
to the type of musician to
hire. If much of what you
select is rock, you probably
don’t want to hire a
harpist or flutist, as the
music won’t suit the

Wedding Flowers

Tastes tend to change
considerably over the
years, and nowhere is this
more apparent than in
wedding planning. Trends
come and go, and what
was once fashionable is no
longer. Take flowers, for
instance. Many brides
today are opting for fewer,
but more daring floral
designs in their weddings.
When it comes to
wedding flowers, brides
have a number of choices.
Roses remain popular, as
do gerbera daisies and
tulips. Tropical flowers are
also hot.
One of the biggest
changes in wedding floral
design is color. Lighter,
more muted shades are
now being replaced with
brighter, bolder hues.
Brides today are not afraid
of mixing reds and yellows,
oranges and purples, and
greens and blues.
Along with stronger
colors, many wedding
floral designs feature
herbs, fruits, vegetables
and other striking pieces.
These help create interest
and add dimension.
To create even more
drama and interest, many
brides are varying the
contents of their center-
pieces. Gone are the
identical baskets of flowers
on each table. In their
place are various kinds of
flowers in various sized
containers. You might find
a large wicker basket of
tulips on one table and a
slender crystal vase of
lilies on another.
As for the bouquets,
brides are going for a
simpler, sleeker look, with
many choosing hand-tied
or posy bouquets. Small,
compact, tasteful bou-
quets with exquisite
flowers and gorgeous
accents are ideal. Flowers
may be embellished with
beads, crystals, faux
jewels, feathers or pearls.
These may be glued inside
petals, strung on wires
over petals, threaded onto
thin strands of glass
within petals or left to
dangle. Ribbon has also
made a comeback, but
instead of being used in
bows, it may be wrapped
around the flower stems.
For brides that choose
not to wear a veil, flowers
may be the answer. They
may use flowers from their
bouquet in their hair,
attaching them with pins
or securing them to
barrettes or a headband.

being more daring with
the flowers for their

Every once in awhile, a book is published that eloquently depicts the
emotional toll and devastating impact that parental drug addiction and
poverty have on its most powerless victims -- children. In “Breaking
Night,” first-time author Liz Murray recounts her hardscrabble journey
from homelessness to Harvard with unflinching detail in this beautifully
written, emotionally raw memoir.
Growing up on University Avenue in the Bronx, Liz received an early
education on the devastating impact of drugs, describing them as “a
wrecking ball tearing through our family.” She realized at a tender age
that her loving yet cocaine-addicted parents were unequipped to be the
parents that she and her older sister, Lisa, wanted and needed them to
be; so, they learned to fend for themselves. At the age of 9, Liz was the
only one in her apartment who could hold down a job. She pumped gas
and bagged groceries at the local supermarket. Whatever tips she made
went toward food and her parents’ drug supply.
After her mother died of AIDS when she was 16, Liz had an epiphany:
She was capable of carving out a life for herself that was in no way
limited by what had occurred in her past. She returned to school,
studying round the clock in tenement stairwells, dimly lit hallways and
near-empty subway cars.
“Breaking night” is urban slang for staying up through the night until
the sun rises, which is what Liz did in order to study and squeeze four
years of high school into two. While homeless, Liz graduated high
school, won a New York Times scholarship and was accepted into
