GENERAL ARRANGEMENT PLAN

Spaces and separations

The general arrangement plan presents a division of the ship into cross section (poprečni presjek)
and longitudinal section (uzdužni presjek) Vessels for cargo or/and passengers are called merchant
ships (trgovački brodovi). All compartments (odijeljeni prostori, pregrade, komore) of the ship can be
vertical separations (bulkheads) and horizontal separations (decks). These compartments serve as
storage space (skladišni prostor).
The extreme fore and extreme end aft is called stem (deblo na pramcu ili krmi).
There are three types of decks:
- Main deck (“weather deck”) provides a shelter (zaklon) for cargoes in the ship interior,
- Forecastle is a foremost part (krajnji pramčani dio) of upper deck, with anchor winches
(sidrena vitla/čekrci),
- Tweendeck is intermediate deck between upper deck and bottom of the ship, and
separates the cargo holds (razdvaja skladišta tereta).

Access to the holds are called hatches (otvori) which, in case of freighters, are enough wide for
grabs to be lowered into the hold (dovoljno široki da se grabilica spusti do dna skladišta).
The foremost and aftermost spaces are the peak tanks (krajni tankovi) as a storage space for ballast.
The anchor chain is stored in the chain locker (lančanik). Also, in the upper part of peaktank, are
stored ropes, pain and materials.
Bulkheads are vertical separations between holds and spaces.

The fore peak and after peak bulkhead are the so-called collision bulkhead. These transverse
bulkheads are watertight (anti-flooding) (vodonepropusne) and fireproof (nezapaljive).
The engine room is watertight machinery space with propulsion plant (pogonsko postrojenje).
Steering room is also watertight compartment and is situated (smještena je) over the after peaktank.
The double bottom provides strength and storage space for fuel, oil, ballast, fresh water.
For prevention of liquid leaking (curenja tečnog tereta) are used the longitudinal and transverse
separations between tanks, called cofferdams.

The part of the ships on the main deck with accommodation for the crew and the passengers,
galley, pantry, and restaurant is called superstructure.

The navigating bridge contains:
- Wheelhouse with control station, chartroom, pilot book and publications) and
- Radio room with instrument for navigation (Radar, the log, the echo sounder, the steering
compass)

The upper deck

The imaginary line from the stem to stern is called fore-and-aft line which divides the
vessel into two sides: a starboard (desna strana) and portside (lijeva strana). The terms for direction
indication (ukazivanje smjera) of the vessel are: ahead, astern, starboard and port.
The upper deck (main deck) is divided in three parts: foremost deck, centre deck
(midships), and the after deck.
The foremost part of the vessel is divided into starboard bow and port bow.
The aft deck is divided on the starboard quarter and port quarter.
