These two pictures show two kinds of places: a city and a village. Compare and contrast them.
Include the following points:
1. the differences between housing facilities
2. neighbours, privacy
3. the activities you can do in the city and in the country
4. schools, job opportunities
These pictures depict a big city and the countryside. The first photo shows a metropolis with high-rise block
of flats and skyscrapers. The second one was taken in the countryside perhaps in a village.
Living in the country is more relaxed than living in a big, noisy city. It has a lot of advantages. No wonder
that people are tend to move from urban to rural areas. You are in touch with the land, the nature. There are
no traffic jams and congested roads so the air is not as polluted as in cities. Another good point is that the
inhabitants have an own house with a garden to grow fruit, vegetables, keep or breed animals. Furthermore,
they can do outdoor activities for example gardening, which is good for their physical and mental well-being
and keep them fit. The neighbours are usually friendly, nice and helpful. You have more privacy in a house
with a big garden than in a block of flats because you are further from your neighbours.
On the other hand, living in a village has some disadvantages. There are fewer facilities, jobs, educational
and entertainment opportunities. Therefore, many people have to commute to schools and workplaces every
day which is very tiring and exhausting. The services are less efficient, fewer cultural events and programs
are organized.
City life is much more exciting and never dull because a lot of facilities are provided. You can go to concerts,
museums, theatres, exhibitions. The wide range of shops are well-supplied. There is also a variety of schools
so there are better chances for work and good education. However, big cities have to face a lot of problems.
They suffer from traffic jams, social stress, poverty, the growing number of unemployed and homeless people.
I would like to live in a big city/in the countryside because……..

Let’s talk about your daily routine.

1. When do you usually get up? I usually get up at about 9 or 10 o’clock, because now I don’t have to
go to school.
What do you usually have for breakfast? I usually have a sandwich, or some slices of toast with
butter and jam for breakfast. I usually drink tea with lemon or milk with my breakfast.
2. What do you do in the afternoon / in the evenings? In the afternoon I usually meet my friends and
we go to the local café and have some hamburger or pizza, and we have a chat, laugh a lot or I
watch TV.
In the evenings, after I have dinner I usually help my mother to clear the table, then I always watch
something on telly or read, or meet my friends.
3. How did / do you get to school every day? I got/get here on foot/by bus/by bike/by train. How long
did / does it take you? It usually took/takes me 10/15/20/… minutes to get here.
4. Which part of the day do you enjoy most? I enjoy the afternoons and evenings most. (Why?)
Because then I can meet my friends and have a good time. What do you like doing at weekends?
5. How do you relax? I usually relax by watching telly, listening to music or just by hanging out on
Facebook. Is it easy for you to find time to relax every day? Well, not really, especially
nowadays. (Why? Why not?) Because of this final exam, but I’m sure after this, it’s going to be easy
to find some time to relax for a while.

A - Good afternoon.
B - Good afternoon. How can I help you?
A - I would like to enquire about summer courses.
B - All right. What would you like to learn?
A - I would like to learn English. What courses can you offer?
B - We have three courses starting in the summer.
A - What level are they?
B - They are all intermediate courses.
A - When are they?
B - Let me see. There is one in Room 11 on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6.00-7.30 p.m., another one in Room
9 on Mondays & Wednesdays from 10.00-11.30 a.m., and the third one is in Room 4 on Saturdays from 8.00-
12.00 a.m.
A - How many lessons do they include?
B - 30, 50 and 60, respectively.
A - How many students are there in one group?
B -It depends. The limit is 15 students for the courses, except for the Saturday course where we work with 8
students.
A - How much do these courses cost?
B - The 30-lesson course costs 25,000 Ft, the 40-lesson course costs 45,000 Ft and the 50-lesson course is
50,000 Ft.
A - Well, I would like to choose a longer course to be able to learn as much as possible, but I cannot attend
the Saturday course, so I think I will choose the 50- lesson course.
B - All right. Please fill in the forms in the lobby and bring them to me. You will also have to take a placement
test.
A - Thank you.

PICTURE DESCRIBING
These pictures show two ways of withdrawing money. Compare and contrast them.
Include the following points:
1. the role money plays in students’ lives
2. the advantages of a bank account
3. if there are any banks in your town

These pictures show two ways of withdrawing money from a bank account. The first picture was taken in a
bank, and we can see a cashier counting banknotes behind a Plexiglass counter. As for me, I prefer
withdrawing money from an ATM, because you don’t have to wait so much. Although maybe it’s safer to
withdraw money inside a bank in the case of huge amounts, but as a student, I usually withdraw smaller
amounts of money, since I don’t have too much money on my bank account. Still, I think it’s good to have a
bank account even if you don’t have so much money, because it’s a good way to save money. If I don’t carry
a lot of cash on me, I won’t spend it (probably). And also, students can own a bank account free of charge,
we don’t have to pay anything for opening or operating a bank account, yet we can enjoy all the convenience
it offers. I really like not having to carry a lot of cash when I go out, and there are more and more shops
which accept bank cards, so it’s really good to have one.
There are two banks in our town, both of them are located in the centre, so they can easily be found. I have a
junior account, my parents opened it for me three years ago, when I was old enough to use a bank card. They
haven’t given me any pocket money since then, but instead, they regularly transfer money to my bank
account. When I have saved enough, I’ll buy a new mobile/tablet/game/bike....

These pictures show different kinds of food. Compare and contrast them.
Include the following points:
1. healthier / less healthy food
2. restaurants where you can eat these types of food
3. popular meals among young people
4. your diet and your family’s diet
I think, nowadays, people eat a lot of unhealthy food. We don't often have time to prepare healthy meals. We
eat pre-packaged, take-away or junk food like pizza, French fries, frozen meals, etc. We also eat a lot of
chocolates, crisps and candies but instead of them we should eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, and we should
cook meals with less fat and spices. Moreover, we should make sure that we drink enough water, milk and
fruit juice, not soft drinks or coffee.
There are a lot of restaurants and fast food restaurants which offer all kinds of food. Fast food
restaurants are less healthy, but nowadays, they offer salads and healthy sandwiches as well. There are also
restaurants where you can find bio, vegetarian and different national cuisines or the usual Hungarian
specialities. Traditional restaurants are mostly preferred by adults and elderly people who like the atmosphere
and the service these restaurants offer. Young people, on the other hand, like to eat a hamburger with French
fries, a pizza, or kebab, or bakery products and pastries. They go to fast food restaurants like McDonalds,
Burger King, or to pizzerias and eateries in shopping centres. These places are the cheapest, fastest and easiest
way to get something to eat, not to mention the fact that it's the usual place for meeting friends and socializing.
I generally pay attention to what I eat so I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and I keep away from junk
food. At the same time, I must admit that I eat a lot of chocolate and crisps as well. I have also tried to convince
my family to eat more healthily and to avoid having so much fat and spices in their meals, but it's quite difficult
to combine a healthy way of eating with Hungarian cooking, which traditionally contains a lot of fat and hot
spices.

1. Do you ever help your parents with housework? Yes, I usually help my parents with housework. What
do you have to do at home? I usually have to do the washing up and the hoovering (porszívózás). What
housework do you like the most? I like dusting (portörlés).Which of them do you hate? I hate doing the
washing up. Why? Because it is boring and tiring.
2. How do you share household chores? Me and my brother(s)/sister(s) take the rubbish out vacuum the
carpets and dust the furniture My father works in the garden/ cuts the grass/waters the plants / washes the
car. My mum cooks the meals and does the shopping and cleans the rooms. Who do you think does the
most in the household? I think it is my mum. What can children do to help? They can do a lot of things.
3. What can make household chores easier? Fortunately, we have some labour-saving devices. What
labour-saving devices do you have? we have a washing machine, a dishwasher, a hoover, a microwave-
oven, a coffee maker, a food mixer. Which of them do you usually use? I usually use the microwave, the
toaster and the hoover. Is it easy to use and clean them? I think it is easy to use and clean them. Do you
think they really make our life easier? Why (not)? I am sure, using household gadgets can make life a lot
easier.
4. How often do you clean your room? I usually clean my room once a week, usually at the weekend. Are
you a tidy person? Yes I am. I like when everything is nice and tidy.

The situation: You are moving into a small, unfurnished rent, and you try to decide which household
appliances to buy first. You need a fridge, a microwave oven, a television, a hoover, a dishwasher and a
washing machine. However, you do not have much money.
Your task: Your examiner will play the part of the shop assistant. Talk to her and decide on the one or two
most important devices to buy. Discuss the necessity of each device, the price, the size and the way to
deliver them home.

A: How can I help you?

B: I’m moving into an unfurnished flat and I’ll need a lot of things to make it comfortable. What household
devices do you think I should buy?
A: It depends on how much money you can spend on them. I believe you will need a fridge and a washing
machine first.
B: A washing machine is very useful, because I need to wash my clothes, and of course, a fridge is also
necessary. How much money do these devices cost?
A: Well, there is a good fridge at a discount price for 60,000 forints, and I can recommend you a fairly cheap
washing machine for 50,000 forints. And what do you think about buying a dishwasher?
B: Well, that’s not so important. I won’t have many dirty dishes to wash.
A: What about a hoover? You can clean the house more easily if you have a hoover.
B: I’m afraid I don’t have enough money for that at first.
A: Can you cook? If not, a microwave oven could come handy.
B: We have a gas cooker in the kitchen and I can cook, so I can buy a microwave later.
A: OK. Let’s find a suitable fridge and a washing machine for you then. Will this one fit into your bathroom?
B: Yes, it would just fit in. I can only buy a small size fridge, because the kitchen is very small.
A: OK. Do you think this one is small enough?
B: Yes, and it is also a bit cheaper. I think I’ll buy these two then. Will you deliver them home for me or should
I arrange the delivery?
A: Our shop offers free home delivery, so you shouldn’t worry about it.
B: OK. That’s great! When will you deliver them?
A: Is tomorrow all right for you?
B: Yes, great. Thank you.

In the first picture I can see students sitting in the library. They are reading books. These students look foreign
students at university. They might be Arabs. The girls and a boy in the foreground are sitting at the desk and
reading something The boy is wearing …
The tall boy in the background is standing in front of the shelves and looking for something.
In the second picture students can be in a secondary school and they have ICT lesson. In the left upper corner,
I can see a man who must be a teacher.
The two pictures have something in common: they depict students who are trying to get new information. You
can gain information on several things from both books and on the internet.
Nowadays you can learn not only from book but you can make you educated by using the computers. E.g. you
can use the word processor to make a composition, you can surf the net for some information (the timetables
of trains, buses, planes). You can book tickets. In addition, you can keep contact with friends. The advantage
of books is reliability.
Although computers are updated and modern, book will never be old fashioned for educated people. The first
picture is more typical in Hungary.
I personally use both books and computer to make me educated.
5 tétel
Now we are going to talk about friendship.
1. Who is your best friend? My friend’s … As for his/her looks; he/she is a long/short brown-haired boy /
girl with a lovely face.
Describe him/her. She’s really pretty / he’s really handsome. Her/his outfit is always trendy. She/he is
very understanding, reliable and he has got a good sense of humour.
How long have you known him? I’ve known him/her for 6 years.
Why do you like him/ her? I like her because She is generally bright and happy and most of the time
kind to me.
2. What makes a good friend? I think she/ he doesn’t necessarily have to be like me, but it’s important
for us to have some interests in common. For example, we like the same music or we do the same sports.
(Reliability is very important between friends. There is an English proverb: “A friend in need is a friend
indeed.”)
3. Have you got any friends in your class? Yes, of course. If so, how do you get on with them? I get on
well with them. They are a nice bunch of people. They are always ready to help and to listen to my
problems. (I really enjoy talking to them when I have some time off from my studies.)
4. How much freedom should teenagers have? I think they should have some freedom to do what they
want.
5. What things would you rather like to discuss with your friend than with your family? I’d rather
talk about my relationship with my friend(s) than to my parents. I fancy talking about fashion, clothes and
sport and things like that.
The situation: You have just applied for a job as an administrator. You are having an interview with the
personnel assistant.

Your task: Your examiner will play the part of the personnel assistant. Tell him/her about yourself, about
your qualities, strengths and personal features. Talk about your CV data (date and place of birth, marital
status), education and training, work experience (even if it was only a summer job), and anything else
you might wish to mention (driving licence, computer literacy, language knowledge etc.).

A- First of all, I’d like to know some personal data. When and where you born?
B- I was born on......................................in................................
A- Are you single or married?
B- I am single.
A- What about your education?
B- I took my school-leaving exam last year and I have just completed an eight- month office work course
which included a 2- month training as well.
A- That’s great. Do you have any work experience?
B- Yes, I do. During my summer holidays, I worked in my mum’s office. I photocopied documents, sent
emails, made appointments and arranged meetings.
A- I see. Can you use a computer?
B- Yes, of course. I am keen on computing. I usually use Word and Excel. I am really into surfing the Net.
A- What languages do you speak?
B- I have a good command of English and I can understand German/Italian but I can’t speak it fluently.
A- I would like to know if you have a driving licence.
B- I am going to have my driving test tomorrow, so I hope I will have my driving licence soon.
A- Oh! Good luck to your test!
B- Thanks!
A- I have one more question. Why do you think you are the best candidate for this position?
B- I love office work very much. My mum has been working for 20 years in the same office and she still
enjoys her work. I am a tactful and well-organised person.
The pictures you can see represent houses with household devices and modern technology. Compare and
contrast them.
Include the following points:
1. furniture (material, size, placement)
2. household appliances
3. how you imagine your future home
I can see two pictures. In the first one, there is a very modern detached house with two or three floors. On the
ground floor we can see a living room through a huge window, and on top of it there is a rooftop terrace.
Many walls are made of glass, just like the stairs on the right side of the room to let the most sunshine into the
building. This way rooms are more open to the garden and also lighter. As a result of this less electricity and
less heating is needed to be used.
In the living room we can see comfortable armchairs and sofas, wooden bookshelves and some paintings on
the wall. I like cosy houses. Our living room has a big sofa and two armchairs too, and opposite the sofa there
is a cupboard with a TV and some books. We also have three bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a toilet.
In the second picture we can see a well-equipped kitchen, which is quite big, and was built in American style.
It has a nice, light brown wooden cupboard with a huge fridge combined with a freezer, a gas cooker and an
oven, a microwave oven, a toaster, a kettle, a percolator and an extractor fan. A big window lights the room.
Our kitchen is similar. I often help my mum with the cooking in the kitchen. I usually use the gas cooker, but
the most I use the fridge and the microwave.
I would like to live in a modern detached house with a huge garden, where I could do some gardening, I would
have a garage, a dog, some cats and a fish pond. I also want to have a terrace with a BBQ and comfortable
chairs and rocking chairs. In the house I would like to have at least 3 or 4 bedrooms, a living room, a study,
a kitchen, 2 bathrooms, a library, a gym, a sauna and a swimming pool. I would have an environmentally
friendly house as it would have solar panels and huge windows, and other extras. I would also like to have
smart gadgets in my dream house: a computer that would control heating, lights, the alarm system, and all
could be managed from my smart phone. Even my fridge would be connected to the internet, so when I run out
of something the fridge would automatically order it from the supermarket and have it delivered.
I think smart homes and modernization is the future, because people work a lot and they don’t like spending
much time with shopping and managing things. They like enjoying their comfortable homes and most people
love gadgets, too. Also more and more people become environmentally aware, and would like to shrink their
carbon footprint with ‘green’ solutions. If gadgets make our homes more environmentally friendly, that is even
better!

We are going to talk about free time activities: reading and watching TV.
1. Do you like reading? What do you read: books, newspapers, online magazines, blogs, webpages
…? What kind of books/ newspapers/ webpages do you read? Yes, I do. I sometimes read books. / No,
I don’t. I’m not very keen on reading books. I think they’re boring. / I read romantic/ sci-fi/ crime story
books. / I read newspapers. / I read only online magazines or webpages. / I read Nemzeti Sport
newspapers. / I read webpages about sports.
2. Where can you get books/newspapers from? I can get books from bookshops or libraries. / I can get
newspapers from newsstands or some shops.
3. Who are you favourite Hungarian and foreign authors? As I’ve told you I don’t really like reading,
so I don’t have any favourite foreign or Hungarian authors. VAGY: My favourite Hungarian author is
……. / My favourite foreign author is …
4. What was the last book you read? The last book I read was Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare. What is
it about? It is about a girl and a boy who fall in love, but can’t be together. Why do you like it? It is just
so romantic.
5. Do you like watching TV? Yes, I do. What kind of channels have you got at home? We have got
different kind of channels at home e.g. Rtl, tv2, Viasat national geography, animal planet …Which is
your favourite? My favourite is Natgeo because I like animals. What kind of TV programmes can

The situation: You and your family have recently moved from a flat to a house. You would now like to
have a dog at home. Now you are talking to your classmate whether it is a good idea to have a pet.

Your task: Your examiner will play the part of your classmate. Tell him/her that in a yard there is plenty of
space, what kind of attention a dog needs, and how you can look after the dog.

- Now we have moved to a new house and I would like to have a dog.
- Who is going to look after it?
- I think I will be able to look after it. As I already have a tortoise, I know what my duty is. A dog needs
more attention, caring, food and water. Of course it needs a clean kennel and regular playing.
- Where can you take it for a walk?
- I think the garden will be big enough for the dog to run and play or I can take it for a walk to the park
nearby.
- What about the neighbours?
- They also have a dog, so it won’t bother them.
- What will happen when you are away on holiday?
- The neighbours can take care of it for a couple of days.
- What kind of dog would you like?
- I would like a medium-type one, a German shepherd.
- If you take care of it, try to convince your parents to buy it.
These pictures show different kinds of jobs. Compare and contrast them. Include the following points:
1. the advantages of both types
2. the disadvantages of both types
3. the type of job you would like to have
In the photos I can see two kinds of jobs. The first picture shows a man with a kind of tool in his hand. It might
be a hammer. I think the picture was taken in a factory, next to a big machine. In my opinion the man in the
picture seems to be satisfied with his job and his position, he might like doing this job.
In the other picture I can see an office with some office workers and computers. As I can see, two of them are
having a rest at the moment and the others are quite busy with their job. They might be preparing diagrams,
reports or answering the phone.
These kinds of jobs are usually preferred by young people who like flexible working hours and pleasant
atmosphere at work.

Traditionally, jobs have been divided into two types, based on the clothing people wear to do their work: blue-
collar job in factories and white-collar jobs in offices. These days, we usually refer to the two types as manual
and office jobs respectively. Some jobs are unskilled: anyone can do these jobs, without being trained. Most
jobs, however, are skilled and many jobs are highly-skilled. If you get a certificate or degree, then you will be
qualified. Because many jobs are specialized, you will receive training to help you do the job. Although you
will probably start as an assistant, you can hope to get a promotion after a while. If you have to commute a
long way to work, you may find it stressful. On the other hand, if you can take long holidays, and your company
provides you with a good pension plan, you may feel glad to have your job.

Personally, I’d be better at an office job than manual work, because I’m keen on working on computers and I
would like to get into a higher position in the future. Actually, my father does a very similar job to the one
shown here. This company is involved in marketing or the media – something creative.

We are going to talk about the role money plays in our life.
1. How can you earn money? People can earn money by taking up a job. In the case of teenagers, we can
only do part-time jobs, and the time we can spend working is limited.
Have you ever had a part-time job? Yes, I have. I worked in the local corner shop/supermarket last
summer.
What kind of jobs can teenagers do? Teenagers can usually find jobs in shops, restaurants...
How much money do they usually get? Teenagers don’t get as much money as adults, but still it’s good to
have some money to spend.
2. Do your parents give you pocket money? Yes, they do. I get some pocket money from my parents every
week, and my relatives usually give me some money for my birthday, at Christmas and at Easter.
Why is it good to have some money at your disposal? It’s good because then I don’t have to ask any
(money) from my parents.
3. What can money be used for? Money is usually just used for buying stuff that you need.
4. How can you save up money? The best way to save up money is by opening a savings account. What do
you save money for? I myself save money for my a new smartphone/a tablet, university education...
5. Have you got a bank account? Yes, I have.
What are the advantages of having a bank account? Perhaps the best advantage of having a bank account
is safety. Money that is left in a home or on you can be stolen or lost in a disaster, such as a fire.
Are there any disadvantages? I think the main disadvantage is that the bank card can be lost or stolen, and
your money can be taken from your account.

The situation: You have applied for a summer job as a shop assistant. Now you are at the job interview.

Your task: Your examiner will play the part of the manager of the shop. Answer his/her questions. Talk
about where you found the job advertisement, your previous job experience and your qualities that make
you the right person for this job.

- Good morning/afternoon.
- Good morning/afternoon..Now, …. . How did you find out about the job?
- I saw it advertised in the local paper.
- Right. You’ve worked in sales before, haven’t you?
- Yes, I used to work in a clothes shop on Saturday mornings. I tidied up the shop, and I had to arrange
the clothes on the shelves.
- Did you do anything else?
- After a few weeks I started serving the customers. I really liked that.
- How long did you work there?
- I worked there during the summer holidays, for nearly seven weeks. I left at the end of August.
- Why do you think you’re the right person for this job?
- Well, I enjoy dealing with the public. I’m also hard-working and enthusiastic.
- When could you start?
- Well, my exams finish on Friday, so I’m available from next week.
- OK. Thanks for coming, …. . We’ll be in touch with you in the next few days.

These two pictures show two families: one of them is a family from the beginning of the 20th century and the
other one is from the 21st century. Compare and contrast them. Include the following points:
1. the basic changes in family life (past and present)
2. the advantages/disadvantages of living in a big/small family
3. the role of the mother/grandparents
In the first picture, I can see a small family, a mother, a father and two children, a boy and a little girl. There
is a dog next to the girl. Pets, like dogs, cats are often regarded as close members of the family. I think
Hungarian families are usually quite small. In the second picture, there is a large family, a mother, a father
and ten children. Judging by their clothes, this photo was taken about 100 years ago. Nowadays large families
are quite rare. Lots of people get divorced so there are several single parent families.
In a small family, parents can give more care to kids. Parents can take them to more places, it’s easier to
organize everyday life or a holiday. Parents can afford to buy more things, /toys, clothes/. In a large family,
it’s difficult to organize everyday life. Parents have to share their attention. The members have to share
everything, toys, food. Life is never boring. You can discuss your problem with the others. On the other hand,
there can be more conflicts and arguments.
In the last 40 or 50 years there have been important changes in family life. The mothers used to be at home all
the time and they looked after the children and prepared meals for the family. More generations lived together,
grandparents could take care of the children or help with the household chores. These days the mothers aren’t
at home, they work and their little children are in kindergarten.

We are going to talk about modern technology.
1. Are you interested in technology?
Yes, I am. I love gadgets, like computers, smart phones, tablets, Play Stations and smart televisions.
OR
No, I’m not. I hate technology.
Do you find it easy or difficult to use modern technology?
I find using modern technology more or less easy. Technology surrounds us and is part of our everyday lives.
2. What kind of technological devices do you use every day?
I use the vacuum cleaner to tidy my room once a week. I help my parents with the household chores, so I
regularly use the dishwasher and the washing machine. To make my breakfast I use the toaster, and the
microwave.
Do you have a fridge, a microwave oven or a vacuum cleaner?
Yes, our home is well equipped. We have all kinds of household appliances, not only a fridge, a microwave
oven or a vacuum cleaner, but we also have a dishwasher, a washing machine, a toaster, a cooker, a freezer
and entertaining devices, too.
3. Can you imagine your life without technology?
No, I can’t. I use technology every day and in all fields of my life.
4. In your opinion, what is the most important invention of all times? Why?
I think Internet is the most important invention of all time. With the help of the Internet, you can find all kinds
of information about anything anywhere in the world, keep in touch with your friends and relatives, listen to
and watch songs, videos and series, play online games with people from all over the world, practice languages,
buy or sell stuff or make friends. To tell the truth, I couldn’t imagine my life without it
The situation:
You are on holiday in England, and you caught a bad cold, because a few days ago you didn’t have your
umbrella with you. You don’t want to go to the doctor’s, so you go to the chemist’s and ask him/her for advice
on what to do. You don’t have much money to spend on expensive medicine.

Your task:
Your examiner will play the part of the chemist. Tell him/her what your symptoms are, ask for some cough
medicine, ask about the price (ask for something cheaper), ask when and how many times you have to
take it.

- Good afternoon. Can I help you?

- Oh, yes. Yesterday I caught a bad cold because I didn’t have my umbrella with me and I got soaked wet.
- Oh, I see. What’s the matter with you? What are your symptoms??
- I’ve got a sore throat, I’m coughing and sneezing, my nose is running and yesterday evening I had a
temperature. It was quite high. Now I feel really awful. Can you give me some cough mixture?
- Yes, certainly. I can recommend you this type of medicine. (It’s a combination of throat lozenges and
antifebrile)
- How much is it?
- It’s eight pounds.
- Eight pounds? I’m sorry; it’s a little bit expensive for me. I’d like something cheaper but as effective as
this one.
- All right, we also have a cheaper one. It’s also very good, and it’s only four pounds.
- Oh, thank you, it sounds better. When and how many times do I have to take it?
- You have to take it three times a day after meals.
- All right, I take it. Here is a five-pound note.
- Here you are, and here’s your change as well. Thank you. Good-bye.

These pictures show people dressed in different clothes. Compare and contrast them. Include the following
points:
1. casual clothes and situations in which you wear them
2. traditional/formal clothes, accessories and occasions they are suitable for
3. types of clothes you usually wear and your favourite outfit
4. the relationship between people’s outfit, musical taste and their personality
These pictures differ from each other a lot. We can see young people who are wearing traditional clothes in
the first picture and we can see a young man wearing casual clothes in the second picture. People wear
traditional formal clothes when they celebrate something.
The first picture shows the Easter Holidays when boys go and sprinkle the girls. Here, they are doing it with a
bucket of water and the girls would like to escape. They are wearing red and green floating skirts and under
them they are wearing pleated skirts (rakott szoknya). Under the pleated skirts they are wearing several layers
of petticoats (alsószoknya) , but you can’t see them here. They are also wearing short-sleeved (rövid ujjú)
white blouses and colourful headscarves. They are wearing boots. Both of the girls are holding white
handkerchiefs (zsepi) in their hands. The boys are wearing more simple clothes than the girls: they are wearing
black trousers and waistcoats (mellény) with long-sleeved (hosszú ujjú) white shirts and hats on their heads.
Nowadays people in Hungary don’t wear these kinds of clothes except for traditionalists (tradicionalisták) and
folk dancers (néptáncosok). The photo might have been taken in Transylvania (Erdély), where the Hungarians
still keep their traditions. However, Hungarian teenagers are rather fashion-conscious ( divat-tudatos). Our
formal clothes in Hungary consist of a suit with a shirt and tie for men and a white blouse and a black skirt for
women.
The boy in picture no.2 is standing in the countryside. It must be winter-time. He has got a modern outfit. He
is wearing a pair of camouflage pants (terepmintás nadrág) with a pair of black boots. His clothes are dark. He
is wearing a black leather jacket and he has got a beanie (kötött sapi) on his head. I can imagine that he is
likely to wear it every day.
I, personally wear a tracksuit with a t-shirt / _________________________ most of the time as it is very
comfortable. I wouldn’t say that I have a favourite outfit / my favourite outfit is a ________ and __________.
Basically, I can put on anything which I feel good in. However, if I go to school or a special event, I try to
choose clothes which reflect my personality and my taste. Tastes in music are often associated with personality.
The young in picture no.1 must like Hungarian folk music and dance. On the other hand, the boy on the picture
no.2 must be keen on rock/metal music (?).

We are going to talk about summer jobs for students.

1. Have you ever had a summer job? Yes, I have. / No, I haven’t. What have your working experience
been like so far? Last summer I went to pick sour cherries with some of my classmates. It was very
tiring. I will never go again but will do something different. VAGY: I’ve never had a summer job, but
my friends who have already worked somewhere always say good things about working.
2. Why do you think students take up part time jobs? I think a lot of students take up part-time jobs
because they simply want some more pocket money to buy something or travel abroad. If you get a job,
you can gain experience and make new friends as well.
3. What are the advantages of working in the summer/having a part time job? What are the
disadvantages of working in the summer/having a part time job? Well, the main disadvantage is
that it’s not easy to get up early and go to work in the summer holidays, one of the advantages is that
it gives you more confidence and you can spend your time in a more meaningful way.
4. What is the most typical summer or part-time job for a student? The most typical summer job for
a student is going to pick fruits, handing out leaflets or working in a fast food restaurant.
The situation: You are walking near an ATM when a tourist asks you to help her with using the machine.

Your task: Your examiner will play the part of the tourist. Tell him/her how the machine works, what kind
of banking you can do at the ATM machine, what procedure s/he has to follow. Ask him/her if s/he wants
to have a transaction receipt printed.

- Excuse me! Can you help me with using this ATM machine?
- Sure. What would you like to do?
- Oh well, I’m not sure. I need to withdraw some cash, but I also want to check my balance (egyenleg), if
possible.
- No problem, you can do both at the ATM, what’s more, you can even change your PIN number or
deposit cash.
- That’s fine. Can you tell me what to do?
- Of course. First, you should insert (behelyez) your bank card into the ATM machine. After that, you are
asked to enter your PIN number, but make sure you cover your hand while doing it!
- Oh, right. What should I do next?
- Well, every option you can choose will appear on the screen. If you need some cash, choose “Cash
withdrawal”. Then you should enter the amount you want to withdraw. Would you like to have a receipt?
- Oh, yes, that would be fine. I guess it’ll have my balance on it as well.
- Yes, it will. Be sure you count the money before you leave!
- Thank you very much for your help.
- Not at all. Have a nice stay in Hungary!
- Thank you! Goodbye!
- Goodbye!

These two pictures show a hotel and a camp-site. Compare and contrast them, include the following points:
1. what a hotel can offer you
2. the advantages of staying in a tent
3. the inconveniences you can have while staying in a tent
These pictures show two types of accommodation - a hotel and a campsite. A hotel is generally the largest of
all accommodation types. Hotel rooms have all the modern conveniences with modern facilities and services.
You can find restaurants, bars, swimming pool, wellness corners with sauna and Jacuzzi there. They can offer
round-the clock services with polite staff around you. There are hotels from simple to luxurious so everyone
can choose one that suits their wallet.
Before going on a holiday we have to book a room on the phone or online. A hotel room can be a single or a
double bed with a bath or a shower. Meals are usually included in the price
However, staying in a hotel can be disappointing; it could be an unpleasant surprise: crowd, annoying
atmosphere with impolite staff, what’s more hotels are quite expensive.
The other photo shows a campsite. It was taken in the nature. There are some caravans(lakókocsi) and tents.
Camping really provides you a real change from everyday life and it has become a great pastime all over the
world. Campsites are usually situated in green valleys, by lakes or ponds and between high mountains. You
can get away from the civilization and overcrowded cities so you can enjoy the absolute freedom. In addition,
a campsite can offer you all the modern conveniences and facilities at a reasonable price. You can sleep in a
tent, in a caravan or in well-equipped bungalows. Modern campsites offer cooking, sport, washing and guarded
parking facilities. On the other hand, campsites have disadvantages. You depend on the weather; the equipment
can be very expensive because you need waterproof, good quality outdoor gear.
I prefer campsites/hotel because…….

We are going to talk about seasons.
1. How many seasons are there in Hungary? In Hungary there are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn
and winter. How can you describe them? The coldest season is winter. The temperature is usually below
zero. It is frosty and snowy. The roads are icy and slippery. In spring the weather is bright and sunny but
it can be rainy and windy, so it is changeable. Summer is the hottest season. The temperature is over 30
degrees. The sun shines, it is hot and dry. Sometimes there can be heavy rainstorms. Autumn is the wettest
season. It is foggy, rainy and overcast. It is good to carry an umbrella with you.
2. Which is your favourite season? My favourite season is summer. Why? Because the weather is good
and I don’t have to go to school. What’s the weather like in Hungary in winter? In Hungary the winter is
rather cold, icy and sometimes snowy.
3. What’s the weather like now? The weather is nice and pleasant. The sun is shining; the sky is clear. And
the temperature is about 25/30 degrees. /It is overcast, rainy and cool. What sort of weather do you like
most?I like the hot, dry sunny weather.
4. What clothes do you wear in winter/summer/spring and autumn? In winter I wear warm clothes so I
put on woollen pullover, jeans or trousers, boots, scarf, cap, gloves and a winter coat. In spring I wear
lighter clothes, for example, just a pair of jeans, a pullover or a cardigan. In summer when the weather
is fine I wear light clothes, lányok: summer dress, shorts, tops, skirts and sandals or slippers/ fiúk: a pair
of shorts, a T-shirt and a pair of trainers. In autumn I wear warmer clothes and a raincoat.
5. In what way do you think our climate has changed? Our climate has changed because of the global
warming (which means the increase in the earth temperature. The most important consequence is the
melting of the polar icecaps and it results the rising of sea-levels. There are floods and other natural
disasters.)

The situation: You are a tourist on holiday with a friend. You are at a motel and would like a room for the
night. You are talking to the receptionist.

Your task: Your examiner will play the part of the receptionist. Ask him/her about available rooms, if there
are private bathrooms, order breakfast, ask about prices and methods of payment.

- Good morning. How Can I help you?

- I would like a double room for the night. Are there any rooms available?
- Let me check the vacancies. What type of room would you like to have?
- What type of rooms have you got?
- There is a room with a private bathroom and there are rooms without.
- I’d like a room with a bathroom. And I would also like to order breakfast.
- Do you have any special request for breakfast?
- We’d like to have an English breakfast, that is ham and eggs with orange juice.
- How would you like to pay?
- We would like to pay by cash/credit card. How much is it altogether?
- That’s 82 pounds altogether. Thank you. Here is your key.
- Thank you. Goodbye.

These pictures show school celebrations and special occasions. Compare and contrast them. Include the
following points:
1. the events and school celebrations in your school
2. the most popular ones and the reasons why students like them
3. events students dislike and why
4. your personal opinion and experiences
There are different school events and celebrations during the school year. For example, the different
commemoration ceremonies on 23 October, on 15 March, and some formal and informal events like the
school-leavers' ball, the comic parade, the Karacs Days and the graduation. At some of the school events
students can be together and have a lot of fun.
The most popular event in our school is the comic parade which is at the end of April and it is followed by the
graduation ceremony. Students in their final year have the serenade the day before this parade, so they are very
tired, but have a lot of fun. They usually put on some crazy clothes or costumes. On the following day there is
the graduation ceremony where they wear formal clothes. They say goodbye to the school building, the
students and their teachers.
Events like the opening and breaking-up ceremonies are not very popular among students, for various reasons.
They don't like to stand in the heat, they find the headmaster's speech boring and they consider the whole
ceremony pointless. They also have to wear formal clothes and the majority of students hate them.
However, I like the Karacs Days a lot. It is always great to organize these events and be part of them to make
others happy and aware of our history
