September 15, 2019 Dr. Sara Harding Dean, School of Arts & Sciences Dr. Harding: Please find below a review of Prof. Matthew Herbertz’s performance evaluation during the 2018-19 academic year, based on his Faculty Activity Report and his student evaluations. Prof. Herbertz, who has completed his second year of employment as an assistant professor at FSC, continues to meet and exceed expectations in the critical areas of teaching, service, and creative productivity. Teaching Prof. Herbertz took on a teaching overload of 16 hours during the F19 term, serving a total of 70, students, excluding four, one-hour directed studies, He added another 16 teaching hours in the spring, plus a directed study. Classroom evaluations were generally in the 6.0 range, with students indicating their appreciation of his deep knowledge of the subject matter, particularly in film-related courses. As an academic advisor, Mr. Herbertz received high marks from students, with ratings deep into the 6.0+ range. Student comments largely supported these evaluations, with one student indicating that Prof. Herbertz treats advises with respect and is available to talk about a variety of subjects. There appeared to be less consensts among students in his F18 Visual Communication (COM 2500) course. Ratings there varied significantly from 3.82-6.82. Some students in their evaluation expressed concern that the instructor had become upset with them and had temporarily left the classroom. Prof. Herbertz indicates in his FAR that he holds students to high performance standards and will offer at times strong and critical feedback. While he is encouraged to continue offering honest feedback as previous instructors have in this course, he should find ways to deescalate tense situations to maximize student performance. Evaluation: Meets Expectations Service: Asa valuable member of the College community, Prof. Herbertz’s service contributions exceeded expectations. Itis clear that his contributions are sought after by many faculty and administrators within FSC. His contributions are extensive and reflect the deep trust and appreciation that his work is held to by our campus community. His leading service contributions included development of the curriculum for the new Film Studies major, supervising four students whose work was presented at Fiat Lux, organized the Southern Reel Film Showcase, holding equipment workshops on Saturdays for interested students, and serving on multiple college- and community-based committees. Evaluation: Exceeds Expectations Creative As with his service contributions, Prof. Herbertz’s work on his creative efforts are numerous and, reflect an appreciation for the creative scholarship that forms the hallmark of the Florida Southern College education. Among his highlights are the wide reception his film Relax has received on the national and global film festivals, which total 18 to date. Another film, My Florida Home, has been accepted into another five festivals. Beyond creative work, Prof. Herbertz's contributions include traditional academic research. He presented two papers at annual conferences sponsored by the Florida Communications Association and the University Film and Video Conference. Evaluation: Exceeds Expectations Sincerely, Alex Ortiz, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Advertising
