1. The girth of G, denoted by g(G), is the order (or the length) of a smallest cycle in
G; if G has no cycles, we define the girth of G to be infinite.

(a) Let G be a graph with g(G) ≥ 4. Show that v(G) ≥ ∆(G) + δ(G).

(b) Is the inequality in (a) still valid if g(G) = 3?

(c) For each n ≥ 4, construct a graph G of order n with g(G) = 4 such that v(G) =
∆(G) + δ(G).

2. Let G be a graph of order n ≥ 3 such that δ(G) ≥ 2
. Determine diam G. Justify
your answer.

3. Construct all non-isomorphic (8, 10)-graphs that are bipartite and that contain a
spanning cycle. Justify your answer.

4. In a group of students, each boy knows exactly k girls and each girl knows exactly
k boys, where k ≥ 1. Is it true that there are as many girls as boys in the group?
Justify your answer.
