--MEDIEVAL MUSIC
MIDDLE AGES—-5th-Fall of the Roman Empire—15th-Discovery of America-Invention of the
printing press
This period began at the 5th century coinciding with the fall of the Roman Empire and
ended in the 14th century with the invention of the printing press (1440) and the
Discovery of America (1492). Europe was divided into small territories dominated by
feudal lords who were always fighting.
There were any monasteries an abbeys around Europe under the direction of the Pope .
His aim was to spread Christiany around the world. This is the period of the Crusades
Medieval society was divided into three main groups: Kings and Pope, Clergy and
nobility and Peasant.
The misión of the clergy was to guide people in spiritual matters. The clergy were at
the centre of medieval culture because the monasteries and cathedrals had schools to
teach the monks to read and write.
-We are going to focus on the music of the clergy and noblemen
-Peasant were as busy working that they didn’t have enought time to compose music
They are all dedicated to the Virgin Mary and some were composed the King himself and
musicians of his court.
Some have colored miniatures showing pairs of musicians playing a wide variety of
instruments.

EDAD MEDIA — 5ª caída del imperio romano — 15º descubrimiento de América — invención de la
imprenta
Este período comenzó en el siglo V coincidiendo con la caída del Imperio Romano y terminó en el
siglo XIV con la invención de la imprenta (1440) y el Descubrimiento de América (1492). Europa
estaba dividida en pequeños territorios dominados por señores feudales que siempre luchaban.
Había monasterios y abadías alrededor de Europa bajo la dirección del Papa. Su objetivo era
difundir el cristianismo en todo el mundo. Este es el período de las Cruzadas.
La sociedad medieval se dividió en tres grupos principales: reyes y papa, clero y nobleza y
campesinos.
La misión del clero era guiar a las personas en asuntos espirituales. El clero estaba en el
centro de la cultura medieval porque los monasterios y las catedrales tenían escuelas para
enseñar a los monjes a leer y escribir.
-Los campesinos estaban tan ocupados trabajando que no tenían tiempo suficiente para componer
música.

Todos están dedicados a la Virgen María y algunos fueron compuestos por el Rey y los músicos de
su corte.
