WORKSHEET no. 2- Understanding Properties of Matter

Direction: Read each item and answer what is required.

1. Magnesium metal is very malleable, and is able to be pounded and stretched into long, thin,
narrow “ribbons” that are often used in the introductory chemistry lab as a source of the metal. If a
strip of magnesium ribbon is ignited in a Bunsen burner flame, the magnesium burns brightly and
produces a quantity of white magnesium oxide powder. From the information given, indicate the
chemical properties and physical properties of magnesium metal.

2. Which of the following does not represent a physical property/change? Encircle the answer.
a. Elemental sulfur boils at 445 °C.
b. Elemental sulfur is yellow in its most common form.
c. Elemental sulfur burns with a dark blue flame in the air to form a gaseous material.
d. Elemental sulfur is rigid and hard

3. Write PP for physical property or CP for chemical property, PC for physical change and CC for
chemical change
a. A rubber band stretches when you pull on it.
b. A cast-iron frying pan will rust if it is not dried after washing.
c. Concentrated hydrochloric acid has a choking, pungent odor.
d. Concentrated hydrochloric acid will burn a hole in cotton jeans because the acid breaks
down the cellulose fibers in cotton.
e. Copper metal combines with substances in the air to form a green “patina” that protects
the copper from further reaction.
f. Bread turns brown when you heat it in a toaster.
g. When you use the perfume your boyfriend gave you for your birthday, the liquid of the
perfume evaporates quickly from your skin.
h. A log of wood is burned in a fireplace.
i. If you leave your steak on the gas grill too long, the steak will turn black and char.
j. Hydrogen peroxide fizzes when it is applied to a cut or scrape.
k. A fireplace poker glows red when you heat it in the fire.
l. A marshmallow turns black when toasted too long in a campfire.
m. Hydrogen peroxide dental strips will make your teeth whiter.
n. If you wash your jeans with chlorine bleach, they will fade.
o. If you spill some nail polish remover on your skin, it will evaporate quickly.
p. When making ice cream at home, salt is added to lower the temperature of the ice being
used to freeze the mixture.
q. A hair clog in your bathroom sink drain can be cleared with drain cleaner.
r. The perfume your boyfriend gave you for your birthday smells like flowers.
s. Mothballs pass directly into the gaseous state in your closet without first melting.

WORKSHEET no. 3- States of Matter

A. Identify what state of matter is being described in each number. Write the letter only.
A. solid B. liquid C. gas D. Plasma E. Boss-Einstein Condensate.

1. Maintains its own volume but has an indefinite shape

2. Has a definite arrangement of particles.
3. Has little or no attraction between particles.
4. A substance that has particles that are strongly attracted to each other.
5. A substance that does not have a definite volume nor a definite shape.
6. The temperatures and densities range from relatively cool and tenuous to very hot and
dense. 7. The physical state of iron at room temperature.
8. It has neither a definite volume nor a definite shape. It often is seen in ionized gases.
9. It also expand slightly when heated.
10. It is used in computer hard drives, TV and others.
11. When they reach that temperature the atoms are hardly moving relative to each
other; they have almost no free energy to do so. It diffuses rapidly.
12. it has the ability to flow and take the shape of the container.
13. It is almost incompressible .
14. A group of atoms cooled to within a hair of absolute zero.
15. It was first applied to ionized gas by Dr. Irving Langmuir, an American chemist and
physicist, in 1929.
