Financial Literacy Syllabus

(A.K.A. Adulting 101)

Spring 2020

Welcome to the most important class you will ever take in high school (and
probably in life!). This class is primarily focused on how to maintain good
financial health, however other topics to be discussed will include domestic,
relationship, and job skills, as well. You will be using project-based instruction
and real-world situations to obtain the knowledge and general understanding of
all key aspects of personal finances necessary to be successful now and
throughout your adult life. The structure of this class will reflect real-world
situations as closely as possible.

There will be two parts to this class: Financial Literacy and Life Skills

The financial literacy curriculum will cover the following:

Chapter 1: Introduction to Personal Finance

Chapter 2: Saving
Chapter 3: Budgeting
Chapter 4: Debt
Chapter 5: Life After High School
Chapter 6: Consumer Awareness
Chapter 7: Bargain Shopping
Chapter 8: Investing & Retirement
Chapter 9: Insurance
Chapter 10: Money & Relationships
Chapter 11: Careers & Taxes
Chapter 12: Giving

Other skills to be covered will include how to maintain a household and care for
your personal belongings (in a college dorm and in your own home), soft skills
including listening, negotiating, reading body language and feeling empathy, and
skills you would need to find and maintain employment such as resume writing,
interviewing for a job, and customer service skills.

COURSE WORK
Grades will be based on the following:
● Journal entries
● Tests/Quizzes
● Activities/Games
● Final Exam - 20% of grade (exempt if less than three absences and an 80%
average)

● A 3-ring binder
● A pack of index cards
● Something to write with
● A box of tissues

CLASS EXPECTATIONS
● Be on time, present, and prepared in correct dress code.

Missing/Incomplete/Late work
● You are expected to complete all assignments, projects, and tests.

together.
● A zero is not an option. You have more than enough time to finish all work in
class if you use your time wisely. You will have to finish work on your own
time if it is not completed in class, or during your lunch time.
● Once a report card grade is submitted, it is final. Final project grades cannot
be accepted past their due date.
