Two Ph.D.

Positions in Signal Processing for Wireless Communications:

Optimised Energy Efficiency and Improved Wireless Security for Future
Wireless Networks

Project Description:
The ongoing development of the incoming 5G networks sets out many challenging requirements, two
of which are optimised energy consumption and enhanced wireless security. The two targets
complement to achieve sustainable economic growth but cannot be obtained by simply modifying
existing wireless communications protocols. The aim of this project is to apply advanced optimisation
techniques to deliver on the two said objectives. We will draw on ultra-dense deployment of low-
power transceivers such as small-cell base stations, wireless access points, remote radio heads,
equipped with some distributed mechanism. Also, the project leverages unique fading characteristic
of wireless channels to design protocols and mechanisms at the physical layer for enhanced wireless
security.

The positions:
Applications are invited for two PhD positions with the Communications & Signal Processing Group at
University College Dublin, which is Ireland's No 1 university for graduate studies with a vibrant student
life and a very strong university incubation program for commercialisation of research. The PhD
positions generally involve developing algorithms for improved energy efficiency and guaranteed data
security for future wireless networks.

Funded:
The Ph.D. positions are funded by a scholarship from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). The scholarship
covers PhD fees and includes a tax-free stipend of €18,500 per annum for four years. Conference
allowances are also included in the scholarship. The PhD students also have chance to work at the
research group of our international collaborators.

Who Should Apply:

Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second class honours Bachelors or Masters
degree in Electrical, Electronic Engineering (or a related discipline), and should possess strong
mathematical, analytical and programming skills. In particular, excellent background in
communication theory and signal processing algorithms are also expected. Some background in
mathematical programming is a plus. Excellent writing and oral communication skills are also required.

How to Apply:
Applications consisting of a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and academic transcripts should be sent to
Dr Nam Tran (nam.tran@ucd.ie).
