Main SECRET of Strong Chess Players

REMOTE CHESS ACADEMY

Even though the goal of a chess game is to checkmate the opponent’s king, that is rarely
the winning strategy in the games of strong players and top grandmasters. Rather, the strong
players’ winning strategy is to go after the opponent’s pawns – they win a pawn and convert a
seemingly equal position into a win.

SUMMARY – Key Takeaways

1. Fix the opponent’s pawns – When your opponent has weak pawns or backward pawns, put a
nail on their heads and FIX them. (at 05:04 in the video; Carlsen vs Karjakin)

2. Attack the opponent’s weak pawns – After spotting (and fixing) the opponent’s weak pawns,
go after them; attack and win them. (at 05:12 in the video; Carlsen vs Karjakin)

3. Occupy/Attack the opponent’s weak squares – In addition to attacking the opponent’s

weak pawns, it’s also important to identify the holes in the opponent’s position and occupy
his/her weak squares and attack them. (at 08:19 in the video; Carlsen vs Short)

4. Push your pawns (especially in the endgame) – Once all the resources drains out for your
opponent, it’s time to push your pawns and promote them. (This is done by Carlsen in all the
examples shown in the lesson, for example at 12:13 in the video)
