(CHAPTER 3: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND NATION-BUILDING)

 Establishing more branches of the Philippine Science High School System for training young
Filipinos in the Field or science and technology
 Creating science and technology parks to encourage academe and industry partnerships.
 Balik Scientist Program to encourage Filipino scientists abroad to come and work in the
Philippines or conduct research and projects in collaboration with Philippine-based scientists.
1. Explanation

The Philippine Science High School System is an attached agency of the Department of Science
and Technology (DOST) by which they provide a scholarship to those students who excel in science
and mathematics. On the other hand, PSHS is considered as the top science high school in the
Philippines and is viewed to be among the best in the ASEAN region by 2016. The PSHS has 16
campuses. Moreover, it was established through Republic Act 3661, authored by Congressman
Virgilio Afable, and signed into law in 1963 by President Diosdado Macapagal by which it offers on a
free scholarship basis a secondary course with emphasis on subjects pertaining to service with the end
in view of preparing its students for a science career”. The school started operations in 1964.
Furthermore, National scientist Dr. Gregorio Velasquez led the PSHS through its first three years. The
campus started in a small rented GSIS-owned property along the Quezon Memorial Circle. In 1970
PSHS started building on a 75,000 square metre lot along Agham Road in Diliman, Quezon City.

Science and Technology parks in the Philippines consist of 6 such as Blue Wave-Marikina,
Eastwood City, Eton Centris, National Science Complex, Riverbanks Center, and U.P.-Ayala Land
TechnoHub. Creating these parks helps in industry and economy in our country such that it could be
partnerships with investors from other countries.

The Balik Scientist Program (BSP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)
encourages Filipino scientists, technologists, and experts to return to the country and share their
expertise in order to promote scientific, agro-industrial, and economic development. The BSP also
aims to support and strengthen the scientific and technological human resources in the Philippines.

2. Reflection

Based on the given topic assigned to me, it is more on the existing programs that is supported by
our government which is through Department of Science and Technology. It includes the Philippine
Science High School System, Science and Technology Parks, and Balik Scientist Program. As for
these programs, it is good to know that our country create these programs that can make us globally-
competitive by which it encourages young Filipinos to explore in the field of Science and
Technology. On the other hand, it boosts the skills of young Filipinos when it comes to Science and
Technology.

3. How can you help in nation building using technology?

As a student, I could help in nation building using technology by using it properly by which we can
discover things that could benefit the people. For example, we could recycle wastes materials into a
new product using technology such as through the help of machine we can make furniture from
recycled materials. On the other hand, we could use technology to advocate for help for the people in
need such that we can use social media in order to gather donations and give information regarding
with their situations.

4. From the past generations, how it affects the modern times?

Science and Technology has a big impact to our generation now which it helps us to become more
modernized. Also, it makes the people’s lives easier by which it creates new inventions. The programs
created by the government to encourage young Filipinos to invent new things that could benefit many
people such discoveries of medicine that could treat contagious diseases.
