What psychological disorder are you researching?
Eating Disorders: Any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or
disturbed eating habits

Types of Eating Disorders: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating

Characteristics of Eating Disorders: Some emotional and behavioral characteristics may


include skipping meals, frequent dieting, severe body consciousness, and extreme mood swings.
Physical characteristics may include extreme weight fluctuations, difficulty concentrating, menstrual
irregularities, dizziness upon standing, chills, and trouble sleeping.
What are some prevention suggestions for an eating
disorder?
There are various programs to aid these disorders:

Universal/primary prevention: These are programs or interventions aimed at all people in a


population (e.g., all adolescents in New York City or students in a health class).

Selective prevention: Intended to prevent eating disorders by targeting individuals who do not yet
have symptoms of a disorder and are at risk for an eating disorder due to biological, psychological,
or sociocultural factors

Indicated/targeted prevention: Targets people who are at high risk due to warning signs (e.g.,
mild ED symptoms) and/or clear risk factors (e.g., high levels of body dissatisfaction).

How is an eating disorder treated?
● Typically includes a combination of different types of treatments; Psychological
Therapy, Nutrition Education, Medical Monitoring, and Medications.
● Involves addressing other health issues resulting from an eating disorder.
● May cause hospitalization if gone untreated
How can you help someone that has an eating disorder?
Some ways you can help someone with an eating disorder is

● Restricting their food consumption since they eat to soothe their emotions
● Try and encourage them to start some treatments.
● Say positive comments to them because if you say negative things it fuels their disorder
What are some statistics pertaining to an eating disorder?
➔ Eating disorders affect all races and ethnic groups.
➔ Genetics, environmental factors, and personality traits all combine to create risk for an eating
disorder
➔ Every 62 minutes at least one person dies as a direct result from an eating disorder.
➔ Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
➔ 13% of women over 50 engage in eating disorder behaviors.
➔ In a large national study of college students, 3.5% sexual minority women and 2.1% of
sexual minority men reported having an eating disorder.

Eating Disorders Anonymous- individuals who are under the same circumstances.

Recovery usually occurs within months, relapses are possible.
