Assignment 1

1. A lossy transmission line at 1 GHz is modelled with R=3.7 /m, L=0.25 H/m, G=0.5 mS/m,
C=100 pF/m.
Calculate: (a) characteristic impedance, (b) attenuation constant (dB/m), (c) propagation
constant (rad/m), and (d) impedance (in ohms) and reflection coefficient (in dB) at the input
of this line having a length of 10 m and terminated in a short circuit.
2. The voltage on a lossless 50  transmission line (velocity = 3 × 108 m/s) terminated in a
complex load has the following features: (a) distance between adjacent minima = 1 m, (b) first
minimum is 0.25 m from the load, (c) amplitude of the minimum and maximum, respectively,
are 1 V and 3V.
Calculate: (a) frequency, (b) VSWR and magnitude of the reflection coefficient, and (c) load
impedance.
3. The voltage standing wave patterns on a lossless transmission line when the line is terminated
in different load impedances are shown in the following figures. In the figures, 𝑙 refers to
distance measured from the load towards the source.
The load can be (a) purely resistive (ZL>Z0), (b) purely resistive (ZL<Z0), (c) purely inductive,
(d) purely capacitive, (e) complex (inductive), or (f) complex (capacitive), where ZL: Load
impedance, Z0: Characteristic impedance

Identify, for each case, the nature of the load. Justify your answer.
4. The input impedance of a transmission line when terminated in a short circuit is 𝑍𝑖𝑛𝑠 =
𝑗28.85 Ω and when terminated in an open circuit is 𝑍𝑖𝑛𝑜 = −𝑗86.6 Ω. (a) Determine the
characteristic impedance of the transmission line. Determine the frequency of operation if the
length of the line is 0.167 m and phase velocity is 2 × 108 𝑚/𝑠.
Determine the input impedance of the transmission line if it is terminated in a short circuit
and the frequency of operation is increased by a factor of 3.
5. In mobile base station, a coax cable having the following properties Z0=50  = 0.25 dB/m,
C=100 pF/m, and v=0.66c, (where c= 3 × 108 𝑚/𝑠) is used to feed a matched antenna
located at a height of 60m from the transmitter. If the power entering the cable at the
transmitter end is 46 dBm, what is the power entering the antenna that eventually gets
radiated? Express your answer in watts.
6. In the demonstration showed in the class, a voltage source with a source impedance of 50 
was connected to a long RG 58 coax cable having a characteristic impedance of 50  and a
capacitance of 100 pF/m. Assume that the cable is lossless. The cable was terminated in 1.2
k resistor and the voltage at the input of the cable was measured as a function of frequency.
It was found that the lowest frequency at which the input voltage is a minimum is 2.22 MHz.
Determine (a) phase velocity on the transmission line, (b) length of the cable, (c) amplitude of
the minimum voltage, and (d) the lowest frequency at which the input voltage is zero when
the line terminated in short circuit.
