The euphoria of success of including Azhar in the list of global terrorists should not lead to
overlooking of the fact that dealing with an aggressive China has become increasingly difficult
in the last one decade
Rare backing down by China
Finally, on May 3, 2-019 The United Nations Security
Council (UNSC) declared Jaish-e-Mohammad chief
Masood Azhar a ‘global terrorist’. This announcement
was preceded by weeks of diplomatic parleys between
India, United States, Britain, France and China. The
Narendra Modi led NDA government wasted no time in
declaring the UNSC decision as a monumental diplomatic
victory for India and called it the country’s third big
achievement against Pakistan after the surgical strike of
September 2016 and Balakot airstrikes of February 2019.
The blacklisting of Pakistan government sponsored
terrorist ideologue Azhar is indeed a resounding
diplomatic victory for India. However, the fervour of
victory is tempered by the fact that it required four
attempts and nine years of tough bargaining with China
even when his role in fomenting anti-India terrorism and
Pakistan government’s support for him was as clear as
daylight. Azhar’s censoring was eventually made possible
by the combined impact of pressure exerted by the United
States and its NATO allies Britain and France on China
and India’s diplomatic efforts at the UN.
The BJP is expecting to reap gains of the win at UNSC in
Lok Sabha elections that concluded on May 19. The long
struggle to get Azhar declared global terrorist is indicative
of the new challenges in dealing with a country whose
economy is five times our size. These challenges appear
even more ominous when we find that India is
continuously getting shackled in the Chinese economic
dragnet. Our exports to China are miniscule but our
imports from Beijing are gigantic.
Sino-Indian relations have revealed a predictable trend in
the past few years. India gets angry over problems created
by Chinese troops who routinely trespass into Indian
territory. New Delhi initiates talks with Beijing and the
matter gets resolved after the two sides listen to each
other’s claims and counterclaims. At the end the
provocation by China appears aimed at only nettling
India. India has resigned to the fact that her giant
neighbour on the eastern border will remain like this only.
What should be India’s standard response to Chinese
aggression on the border as well as on international issues
where both countries have divergent views is matter of
debate among policy makers. Is boycott of Chinese goods
possible?

India’s dependence on Chinese imports
When China blocked Azhar’s listing as global terrorist for
the fourth time at UNSC in March 2019, the most popular
and prompt response on social media by Indian citizens
was a call for boycott of Chinese goods. This appeared
when the #boycottChinesegoods hashtag started trending
on Twitter. The fact that most of the smartphones used for
launching and popularising such campaigns are made in
China or assembled using Chinese parts is a fact
conveniently overlooked.
Any campaign to boycott Chinese goods is unlikely to
ever become successful and this should not surprise
anyone. Earlier in November 2016, Indian business
associations had announced a ban on Chinese products
during Diwali festival season. Like in the past all such
campaigns remain confined to the social media without
creating any impact on the ground. Annual import of
expensive telecom, power and electronic appliances has
crossed $75 billion dollars. Chinese products have
become an integral part of Indian product supply chains.
India’s dependence on Chinese products has shown a
steady rise over the past five years. Bilateral trade
according to Indian Commerce Ministry’s data had
reached $89.7 billion in 2017-18. India’s exports to China
were worth just $13.7 billion while China’s exports to
India were a whopping $76.3 billion. The trade balance in
favour of China was $63 billion. It was $52.7 billion in
2016-17. Contrary to conventional thinking less than 5%
of China’s exports to India comprise cheap goods used by
the masses.
China has a dominant presence in India’s consumer goods
market. A large part of every mobile phone is imported
from China, either directly or indirectly (in the form of
CKD-completely knocked down kits). China has a strong
presence in white goods (TV, refrigerator) market as well
and any boycott will result in prices of these products
rising and hurting the Indian consumer.
Since the economic reforms initiated in 1991, the Indian
government has announced grand plans to revive
manufacturing sector in the country but opened the Indian
market for foreign goods without analysing whether
Indian companies have the competence to compete with
foreign products. In such a scenario, India is unlikely to
find alternatives to Chinese imports in the short term.

For example, let’s consider the pharmaceutical sector
where India imports 75% of its raw material (Active
Pharmaceutical Ingredients – API) requirements from
China. In 2017-18, India imported API and other
essentials worth $2.5 billion from China but exported
manufactured medicines worth just $200 million.
According to India’s Pharmaceutical Exports Promotion
Council, China’s pricing advantages come from its
availability of cheap skilled labour and incentives the
industries get from the government there. This factor is
changing and labour costs and prices are rising in China.
Another factor that is making China’s pharma exports
competitive is the upgradation of manufacturing facilities
according to guidelines of International Council For
Harmonisation (ICH). This enables Chinese companies to
export to developed country markets where quality and
safety standards are stricter. Even after prices of many
API imports have nearly doubled, Indian companies have
continued to procure them from China as domestic
manufacturing is even more costly. The focus in Indian
pharma industry was on finished products (medicines)
and raw material manufacturing (API) had taken a
backseat in the previous two decades. API was neglected
in India. Unless India overhauls its API manufacturing
dependence on China is unlikely to end in the near future.
India’s options
Among consumer goods, smartphones account for the
lion’s share of revenues China gets from its exports.
Indian consumers are buying cheap as well as expensive
mobiles from China. Oppo, Xiaomi, Vivo and Huawei are
among the top five sellers of mobiles in India with
Samsung being the only non-Chinese company. Xiaomi
and Vivo have started assembling their mobiles in India
and in future the parts that go into the making of these
mobiles are also likely to be made by them in India.
So where are India’s options? China has a huge trade
surplus with India. In some products categories even if
customs duties on some imports are hiked, importers will
increase prices which will be borne by the Indian
consumer. No other country has the ability to compete
with China on the price front. China is the top exporter to
India but its exports to India account for just 3% of its
manufacturing sector. So, the talk about hurting China for
its closeness to Pakistan and its hostility on the border by
closing Indian market to its exports is nothing more than
speculation. Even in mobile phones, India accounted for
just 4% of China’s production in 2017 and was only the
sixth largest buyer worldwide.
One ray of hope for India could be the looming trade war
between USA and China. If China becomes desperate to

find new markets to compensate for losing access to US
markets then it can be forced to shift manufacturing to
India instead of merely exporting goods. The government
needs to formulate a long-term strategy to counter the
dominance of China in India’s economy. Domestic
manufacturing needs to be promoted with incentives and
productivity of labour needs to be improved.
Government’s ‘Make in India’ and various skill
development schemes for labour are steps in the right
direction but are yet to translate into visible
improvements on the ground.
India’s options are also limited because business ties with
Chinese companies are mostly of private sector
companies. A democratic country like India can’t just
order its private sector companies to stop importing from
China. On the other hand, the Chinese government has
significant control over its large companies such as
Huawei. This is the reason Huawei has been banned from
selling its telecom equipment by governments of many
countries including United States and Australia.
There are no short-term measures to tackle China. The
only way forward is to replicate China’s success in the
manufacturing sector.
India and Japan in same boat
India is not the only country in the world facing this
predicament where it is at the receiving end on both
political and economic fronts in dealing with China. Japan
has faced similar problems in dealing with China. Both
nations are strong competitors on political and trade
fronts. Japan is a staunch ally of United States and has
cordial relations with South Korea. China and the US are
sworn rivals. Also, China is the world’s only backer of
North Korea which irritates both South Korea and Japan
by its nuclear plans and frequent missile tests. Unlike
India-China differences, which emerged only after the
two countries became independent nations, Japan-China
hostility dates back to the starting decades of 20th century
when an imperial Japan invaded China and treated them
like slaves. But both Japan and China have managed to
sink their political differences for the sake of their
business and trade relationship. Labour costs in Japan are
very high and most Japanese companies have shifted
manufacturing to developing countries including China.
The stability in Japan-China relations since 2015 is
because of the realisation by both nations of the economic
interdependence on each other. Coming to India, China’s
business and trade relations with India are much smaller
compared to its ties with Japan, South Korea and
ASEAN.

 India increased its defence spending by 3.1 per cent to
USD 66.5 billion in 2018, according to a new report on
global military expenditure released on April 29 by
Swedish think tank Stockholm International Peace
Research Institute (SIPRI). United States remained
world’s biggest defence spender in 2018 with $649
billion (+4.6%), accounting for 36% of total global
military expenditure.
 India has suspended the trade across the Line of
Control (LoC) with Pakistan after probe agencies found
the route was being “misused” by elements from the
neighbouring country to smuggle illegal weapons,
drugs and fake currency. The LoC trade, at present, is
conducted through two trade facilitation centres located
at Salamabad in Uri of Baramulla district, and
Chakkan-da-Bagh in Poonch district. This trade takes
place four days a week and is based on barter system
and zero-duty.
 The 14th edition of the annual Sino-Indian border trade
opened at Nathu La in Sikkim on May 1. The bilateral
border trade between the two countries is organised
four days a week for six months, between May 1 and
November 30, every year.
 Indian Army has claimed that its Mountaineering
Expedition Team sited a series of huge mysterious
footprints measuring 32 inches by 15 inches on April 9.
The footprints are believed to be that of elusive
snowman ‘Yeti’. The expedition to Mt Makalu, which
is 8485 metres high, consisted of 18 members and was
flagged off from Delhi on March 27.
 To commemorate the recently concluded Ardh Kumbh
Mela, held in Prayagraj from January 15 to March 4,

100-page book — Soul of The Kumbh.
 To mark the 70th anniversary of establishment of its
diplomatic ties with India, Indonesia has released a
special commemorative stamp on the theme of
Ramayana. The stamp, designed by Indonesian sculptor
Padma Shri Bapak Nyoman Nuarta, features a scene
from Ramayana in which Jatayu fought to save Sita.
The launch event was attended by India’s Ambassador
Pradeep Kumar Rawat on April 24.
 The US placed India on its ‘Priority Watch List’ on
April 25 alleging lack of “sufficient measurable
improvements” to its Intellectual Property (IP)
framework on long-standing and new challenges that
have negatively affected American IP rights holders

 International Day For Monuments and Sites (World
Heritage Day) was celebrated on April 18. Theme was
‘Rural Landscapes’. 18 April is a day to celebrate and
promote cultural heritage, and an opportunity to raise
awareness about its diversity, its relevance, how
vulnerable it can be and what the needs and benefits of
its conservation are. India has 37 (29 cultural, 7 natural
and 1 mixed) World Heritage Sites listed by UNESCO.
Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai
(Cultural) was the 37th Indian inclusion in the list in
2018.
 The Asian Tea Alliance (ATA), a union of five tea-
growing and consuming countries, was launched in
Guizhou in China on April 19. The members of this
alliance are tea associations from India, China,
Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Japan. ATA plans to work
towards enhancing tea trade, cultural exchanges,
technology exchanges as well as globally promoting
tea. It will also work towards enhancing global
consumption of tea, while creating a sustainability
agenda for the future of Asian tea.
 The United Nations owes India $38 million — the
highest it has to pay to any country — for the
peacekeeping operations as of March 2019, UN
Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said as he
voiced concern over the world body’s deteriorating
financial health.
 The Chhyoiphel Kundeling monastery, rebuilt through
an Indian grant, was inaugurated at Lisankhu village in
Sindhupalchok district on April 19. The Embassy of
India’s Deputy Chief of Mission, Ajay Kumar, attended
the inauguration ceremony.
 Navies of India and France organised Varuna naval
exercise off the coast of Goa from May 1 to 10. The
first part of the joint naval exercise was held off the
Goa coast, while the second phase is scheduled for later
in May in Djibouti.
 Navies of India and Vietnam held a four-day maritime
exercise off Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam from April 13
to 17.
 India was the guest of honour at the 29th Abu Dhabi
International Book Fair held from April 24 to 30.
 Indian Navy warships INS Kolkata & INS Shakti
participated in PLA Navy International Fleet Review
(IFR) from April 22 to 25, 2019. China observed the
70th year of the People’s Liberation Army’s Navy on
April 23 on the occasion of which the fleet review was
organised.

 Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met her
Portuguese counterpart Joao Gomes Cravinho in New
Delhi on April 17.
 Twenty states and Union territories have so far joined a
pan-India network of single emergency helpline
number ‘112’ on which immediate assistance can be
sought by anyone in distress. To access emergency
services, a person can dial ‘112’ on a phone or press the
power button of a smart phone three times quickly to
send a panic call to the Emergency Response Centre. In
case of a normal phone, a long press of the ‘5’ or ‘9’
key will activate the panic call. People can also use
‘112’ India mobile app. The ‘112’ helpline is an
integration of police (100), fire (101) and women
(1090) helpline numbers and the project is being
implemented under the central government’s Nirbhaya
Fund.
AWARDS
 The article titled ‘Coalgate 2.0’ authored by Nileena M
S and published in The Caravan magazine in March
2018 has won the 2018 Asian College of Journalism’s
Award for Investigative Journalism. The award, which
comprises a trophy, a citation and Rs 2 lakh cash prize
was presented to the winner in Chennai on May 3 at the
journalism school’s annual convocation ceremony.

HAPPENINGS
 The 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International
Corporation was organised in Beijing from April 25 to
27. The three-day forum provided a platform to the
countries participating in Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)
for exchanging views and experiences on regional
connectivity, policy synergy, socio-economic
development and trade, and commerce. India, for the
second consecutive time boycotted the forum that was
attended by leaders and representatives of 37 countries.
 The Arab League, meeting in Cairo on April 28,
pledged to pay USD 100 million a month to the
Palestinian Authority (PA) to plug the gap left when
Israel blocked tax transfers earlier in the year. Israel
collects taxes on behalf of the PA, but withheld USD
138 million in transfers in February over Palestinian
payments to political prisoners jailed for attacks against
Israelis.
 According to the 2019 Global Food Policy Report
(GFPR) released on April 26, rural population accounts
for 45.3% of the world’s total population and at least
70% of the world’s population remains extremely poor.
The report was released by the Washington DC-based
International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
 The Social Democratic Party (SDP) narrowly beat the
right-wing Finns Party in the parliamentary elections
held in Finland for the 200-seat Parliament Eduskunta.

has decided to withdraw from the Arms Trade Treaty

 The UK government has set up a Modern Slavery
Innovation Fund (MSIF) to combat modern day slavery
across the world.

 In a first in recent history of tax filings, income tax e-
filings in FY2019 have dropped by more than 6.6 lakh.
According to statistics put out on Income Tax
Department’s e-filing website, income tax e-filings in
FY 2018-19 was 6.68 crore, down from 6.74 crore in
the previous fiscal. E-filers in FY 2016-17 were 5.28
crore. In signs of lower compliance, the ratio of actual
filings to registered filers was 79 per cent in FY2018-
19, down from 91.6 per cent in the previous fiscal.
 The Finance Ministry has admitted that the economy
‘appears to have slowed down slightly in 2018-19’. The
Department of Economic Affairs’ monthly economic
report for March, published on May 1, has listed
reasons for the slowdown. “The proximate factors
responsible for this slowdown include declining growth
of private consumption, tepid increase in fixed
investment, and muted exports,” it said. On the supply
side, it said, the challenge is to reverse the slowdown in
growth of agriculture sector and sustain the growth in
industry.
 India remains electricity-deficit nation with peak power
deficit at 0.8% and an overall energy deficit at 0.6% in
2018-19. This was stated by the Central Electricity
Authority (CEA) in its load generation balancing report
(LGBR) for 2018-19. According to the latest CEA data,
during peak hours, as much as 175.52 gigawatt (GW)
was supplied against demand of 177.02 GW leaving a
deficit of 1.49 GW or 0.8% in 2018-19. The data
showed that as much as 1,267.29 billion units (BUs) of
electricity was supplied against the demand of 1,274.56
BUs leaving an overall electricity or energy deficit of
7.35 BUs or 0.6 per cent during 2018-19.
 India imported 207.3 million tonnes of crude oil in
2018-19, down from 220.4 million tonne in the
previous financial year. Iraq sold 46.61 million tonnes
of crude oil to India during April 2018 and March 2019
followed by Saudi Arabia with 40.33 million tonnes.
 India produced 34,203 thousand metric tonnes (TMT)
of crude oil during 2018-19 (April to March) which is
4.15 per cent below the output in the previous financial
year. The natural gas production totalled 32,873
MMSCM (million metric standard cubic metres) in
2018-19, up 0.7 per cent compared to production in
2017-18.
 Data on India’s merchandise trade in April-March 2019
was released in April. Exports rose 9.1% to US$ 331.02
billion while imports increased 9% to US$ 507.44
billion. Trade deficit was US$ 176.42 billion.

 The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation rose
for second consecutive month to 3.18% in March 2019
on costlier food and fuel, government data released on
April 15 showed.
 The country’s gold imports dipped about 3 per cent in
value terms to $32.8 billion during 2018-19, according
to data from the commerce ministry.
 India Ratings and Research marginally lowered
country’s GDP growth projection for 2019-20 fiscal to
7.3 per cent on April 30. The Fitch group company had
earlier projected India’s gross domestic product (GDP)
growth at 7.5 per cent.
 India’s industrial production (base year 2011-12=100)
declined 0.1% in March 2019, official data showed on
May 10, 2019. The cumulative industrial production
increased 3.6% in April-March FY2019 compared with
4.4% growth in April-March FY2018.
 Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC)
distributed more than one lakh bee-boxes among
farmers and unemployed youths across the country in
less than two years under its ‘Honey Mission’ initiative,
said KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena.
 The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has divested its entire
stake in National Housing Bank (NHB) and the
National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development
(NABARD) for Rs 1,450 crore and Rs 20 crore,
respectively, the central bank said in a statement on
April 24, 2019.
 The Centre on April 27 raised wheat import duty from
30% to 40% to support local farmers from further price
fall and prevent its possible import.
 Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) will have 12
months to monetise non-core assets identified by a
ministerial panel headed by the finance minister, failing
which the finance ministry may restrict budgetary
allocations to them. The Department of Investment and
Public Asset Management (DIPAM) issued guidelines
in April for monetisation of non-core assets of CPSEs
and immovable enemy properties.
 Himachali Kala Zeera, Jeeraphool from Chhattisgarh
and Kandhamal Haldi from Odisha are among the 14
products that have received Geographical Indication
(GI) tag from the government so far this year.
According to the data with the department for
promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT), the
other products which received this tag include Sirisi
Supari (Betel Nut) from Karnataka and Himachali
Chulli oil.

cities in the world, according to the Economist
Intelligence Unit’s 2019 Worldwide Cost of Living
Survey. The world’s cheapest city is Caracas
(Venezuela). The Worldwide Cost of Living Survey
compares more than 400 individual prices across 160
products and services in cities around the world. This
data is used to produce the annual Worldwide Cost of
Living Report which provides a ranking of the world’s
major cities.
 Oil giant Saudi Aramco made the world’s biggest
corporate profit in 2018. Moody’s Investors Service said
Aramco posted a net profit of $111.1 billion in 2018 and
generated $359.9 billion in revenues. In 2018, US oil
giants Chevron and Exxon Mobil, Britain’s BP, Anglo-
Dutch rival Royal Dutch Shell and France’s Total
together posted nearly $80 billion.
 A Belgian racing pigeon named Armando fetched a
record 1.25 million euros in an online auction recently.
Armando broke the previous record of 376,000 euros
($425,000) paid for a pigeon called Nadine. Homing
pigeons are raced by releasing them sometimes
hundreds of kilometres from home, with the first back
home winning.
 Global sales of counterfeit and pirated goods have
soared to USD 522 billion a year, amounting to a
whopping 3.3 per cent of world trade, according to the
latest assessment by the EU Intellectual Property Office
(EUIPO) and the OECD. The report was based on data
from almost half a million customs seizures by

 Italian chocolate giant Ferrero has announced plans to
acquire the biscuit and snack businesses of the
American Kellogg Company for USD 1.3 billion. The

founded as a family business in 1946, is well-known for
Ferrero Rocher and Nutella brands.
 US oil giant Chevron announced plans to acquire
Anadarko for USD 33 billion. “The acquisition of
Anadarko will significantly enhance Chevron’s already
advantaged Upstream portfolio and further strengthen its
leading positions in large, attractive shale, deepwater
and natural gas resource basins,” the company said.
 Private equity fund Samara Capital is acquiring 50 per
cent stake in Blue Heaven Cosmetics, a family-run
company founded by Charanjit Singh and Gurnam
Singh. The company markets a range of cosmetic
products under the brand Blue Heaven.
 Hotel Leela Venture Ltd has announced sale of its four
hotels, including one in the national capital, and a
property to Canadian investment fund Brookfield for Rs
3,950 crore. Proceeds of the sale “will be paid to the
lenders of the company towards repayment of dues.
 Larsen & Toubro has bought a 20.32% stake in IT
services firm Mindtree for Rs 3,269 crore from Cafe

 JLL India, a professional services firm specializing in
real estate, launched its annual Home Purchase
Affordability Index (JLL HPAI). The Index signifies

 India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) will
discontinue sale of diesel cars in the country from April

Business Biography
Ritesh Agarwal: Hawking hotels
Vision, commitment, hard work, acumen and experience
are the essential ingredients in the creation of a successful
entrepreneur. Most achievers in business reach their
exalted positions only after toiling for years but there are
exceptions. Some entrepreneurs reach
the pinnacle at a young age even
when they do not come from wealthy
business families where finding funds
for starting a new venture is not an
issue. OYO Rooms founder and CEO
Ritesh Agarwal is among these
worthy exceptions. He founded his
hospitality portal in his early 20s and
has made it a household name in just
few years.
Ritesh was born in a middle-class Marwari family in
Cuttack, Odisha in November 1993. His father works at
an infrastructure company while his mother is a
housewife. He has three sisters. Ritesh did his schooling
from Sacred Heart School in Rayagada district of Odisha.
After completing his school education, Ritesh went to
Kota, Rajasthan to prepare for IIT entrance exam in 2009.
His heart was not into studies and starting his own
business was his sole ambition in life. Ritesh did not want
to ask his family for money and did not tell them about
his lack of interest in IIT coaching. A business plan had
started germinating in his mind and he even sold mobile
SIM cards to earn money to support himself in Kota and
later Delhi.
Ritesh frequently visited Delhi on weekends during his
stay in Kota to explore opportunities for starting his own
venture. The idea of eventually foraying into hotels
booking segment came from his stays in various hotels in
Delhi. Ritesh was not satisfied with the information on
hotels available to travellers coming to Delhi and the
huge gap between expectations and actual service the
customers got at these hotels. Also, the discounting
policies of most hotels were not transparent and the
extent of discount one got depended on the customer’s
haggling and bargaining abilities. Ritesh wanted to make
the process standardised and transparent and this
motivated him to start his own online venture.
Ritesh was greatly inspired by famous dropouts such as
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Apple co-founder Steve
Jobs Bill and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and
decided to start his own business venture. The year was

2012 and Ritesh was just 18 years old. His family was not
very rich and finding money to start and run his business
was not easy. The company he started was Oravel Stays
in 2012. It was an online platform that created and
uploaded lists of various hotels
in a city and enabled booking
by customers at hugely
discounted rates. Its target
segment was budget conscious
travels who needed basic
amenities and were not willing
to spend money on luxurious
accommodation. When Ritesh
desperately needed money to
fund expansion of Oravel, he
came to know about ‘20 Under 20 Theil Fellowship’.
This fellowship was started by PayPal co-founder Peter
Theil. It selects 20 promising entrepreneurs of age 20 and
below and provides them $100,000 to finance their
business. Ritesh applied for this fellowship and became
the first Indian to get selected.
Few months after starting Oravel, Ritesh realised that
economical price is not the only concern for travellers
with low budget and comfort also mattered a lot. By
providing discounts in excess of 50% tariffs were kept
low but customers were not satisfied with the quality of
services provided in such hotels. So Ritesh decided to
take up the matter of service with managements of hotels
listed on his website and started displaying customer
rating and feedback on his booking website. Meanwhile
he also changed the name of his venture from Oravel
Stays to OYO Rooms to highlight the change in his
business strategy. Today OYO Rooms is popular not just
for low tariffs but also quality and comfort. Most rooms
come with incentives such as free breakfast and low
cancellation charges. The OYO Rooms app has become
one of the most popular mobile apps in travel and tourism
industry in India. The first hotel listed on OYO Rooms
was from Gurgaon and today the platform has more than
7000 hotels in close to 200 cities across India and abroad.
OYO Rooms announced plans to acquire Netherlands-
based vacation rental business @Leisure Group for
€369.5 million in May 2019. From 2018, OYO has also
started owning and operating few hotels instead of just
being a booking platform for hotels listed on its website.
Even though OYO is yet to earn a single Rupee in profit,
financers understand its business potential and
availability of money has never been an issue for Ritesh
to implement his expansion plans.

Cyber Buzz
 The Madras High Court lifted its ban on Chinese social
media app TikTok on April 24 with the condition that
the platform should not be used to host obscene videos.
The high court had on April 3 directed the Centre to ban
the mobile app TikTok, which is used to create short
videos, as it voiced concern over “pornographic and
inappropriate content” being made available through
such apps. Hearing a plea by the Chinese company
ByteDance, which owns the app, challenging the ban,
the Supreme Court had asked the firm to raise its
grievances before the high court.
 Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with over 43.5 million
likes on his personal Page and 13.7 million likes on his
official Page on Facebook, is the most popular world
leader on the social network. US President Donald
Trump is at the second place with more than 23 million
likes on his personal Facebook Page and Jordan’s Queen
Rania is third with 16.9 million likes. This was disclosed
in the ‘2019 World Leaders on Facebook’ report
prepared by communications agency BCW (Burson
Cohn & Wolfe) on April 11.
 Bharti Airtel and the FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO)
New Delhi launched a safety app My Circle that is
aimed at aiding women in event of distress or an
emergency situation. The SOS alert can be launched by
pressing the SOS prompt on the app. It will instantly
send an SOS alert along with the user’s location over
SMS to the five contacts selected by the user and advise
them to immediately reach out or respond to the
emergency situation. The app operates by estimating the
accurate location of the user which their family and
friends can track in real time on a link that is sent as part
of the alert SMS.
 State-owned SAIL has introduced smart steel garbage
bins that can emit signals to the collection vehicles about
the fill-up position. “The smart garbage bins made up of
stainless steel can not only collect unbridled garbage but
also send signals to the collection vehicles about the fill-
up position,” Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) said in
a statement. There will be separate bins for recyclable
wastes and non-recyclable wastes.
 RailWire Wi-Fi by RailTel is now live at 1600 railway
stations across the country, with Santacruz railway
station in Mumbai becoming the 1600th station to
become a RailWire Wi-Fi zone recently. PSU RailTel is
one of the largest neutral telecom infrastructure
providers in the country owning a pan-India optic fibre
network on exclusive Right of Way (ROW) along
Railway track. RailWire is a retail Broadband initiative
of the RailTel, which envisages extending broadband
and application services to the public.

 Users of Android devices in Europe will be able to
choose their browsers and search engines from five
options. The European Commission said Google had an
unfair advantage by pre-installing its Chrome browser
and Google search app on Android smartphones and
notebooks. Android users in Europe who open Google
Play will now see new screens with an option to
download different search apps and browsers.
 TCS has completed modernisation of a network of more
than 150,000 post offices of India Post. In 2013, TCS
had announced receiving an over Rs 1,100 crore multi-
year contract from the Department of Posts (DoP) for an
end-to-end IT modernisation programme.
 Google Pay recently announced its partnership with
MMTC-PAMP India for buying and selling of gold
through the application. MMTC-PAMP India Pvt. Ltd is
an internationally recognised metal and mining service
provider. With this, Google Pay users can purchase gold
for any value that will be stored in secure vaults on their
behalf by MMTC-PAMP. The users can buy and sell
99.99 per cent 24 karat gold any time at the latest price,
refreshed every few minutes, as displayed on the Google
Pay app.
 Google has opened an artificial intelligence (AI)
research laboratory in Accra, Ghana to address
economic, political and environmental issues across the
continent. Similar research centres have already opened
in cities around the world including Tokyo, Zurich, New
York and Paris. The new lab would use AI to develop
solutions in healthcare, education and agriculture -- such
as helping to diagnose certain types of crop disease.
 Singapore-based merchant platform firm Pine Labs has
acquired Bengaluru-based gift card solutions provider
Qwikcilver for $110 million. Founded in 2006,
Qwikcilver is a full-stack gift card service provider.
Kumar Sudarsan is Co-Founder and CEO of Qwikcilver.
Pine Labs started its own gift solutions business “Pine
Perks” four years ago.
 Online payment service provider PayU has announced
the acquisition of US-based financial technology firm
Wibmo for $70 million (around Rs 484 crore).

businesses from financial and reputational losses due to
cyberattacks. It will offer protection against major
insurable cyber exposures like hacking attacks, identity
theft, disclosure of sensitive information and business
interruption.
 Twitter has acqui-hired quote sharing app Highly for an
undisclosed sum. Highly allows users to quickly
highlight quotes from articles and share via email or
social media.

World’s first malaria vaccine launched
The world’s first malaria vaccine was launched in Malawi
on April 24. The World Health Organization (WHO)
welcomed the Government of Malawi’s landmark pilot
programme. The launch of the first and only malaria
vaccine, known as RTS,S (trade name Mosquirix), makes
Malawi the first of three countries in Africa where it will
be made available to children up to
2 years of age. Ghana and Kenya
will introduce the vaccine in the
coming weeks, WHO said.
Worldwide, malaria kills 435 000
people a year, most of them
children. “We have seen
tremendous gains from bed nets
and other measures to control
malaria in the last 15 years, but progress has stalled and
even reversed in some areas,” said Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General.
Thirty years in the making, RTS,S is the first, and to date
the only, vaccine that has demonstrated it can
significantly reduce malaria in children. In clinical trials,
the vaccine was found to prevent approximately four in
10 malaria cases, including three in 10 cases of life-
threatening severe malaria.
The vaccine is a complementary malaria control tool -- to
be added to the core package of WHO-recommended
measures for malaria prevention, including the routine use
of insecticide-treated bed nets, indoor spraying with
insecticides, and the timely use of malaria testing and
treatment.
The RTS,S vaccine has been developed through a
collaboration between GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and the
Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and has been
funded in part by the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative
and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Its efficacy
ranges from 26 to 50% in infants and young children.
GSK, the vaccine developer and manufacturer, is
donating up to 10 million vaccine doses.
CCMB to develop cell-based meat
The country’s first project to research on cell-based meat,
also called clean meat, would be taken up at the Centre
for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) with the
Department of Biotechnology (DBT) deciding to give Rs.
4.5 crore for the two-year work as the initial grant.

The National Research Centre on Meat, which has a unit
at Chengicherla abattoir in Hyderabad, would partner
with the CCMB in the pioneering work to develop
cultured meat, which is said to be equivalent to
conventional animal meat in terms of taste and feel, with
the only difference being in the method of production.
Clean meat would be produced through cellular
agriculture with cells sourced from animals and cultivated
into meat. Hence, it promises to revolutionise the food
system by providing protein without harming the
environment, said CCMB Director Rakesh Mehra on
April 25.
Tata Chemicals gets ISRO’s Lithium-ion tech
Tata Chemicals Limited (TCL) has signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian
Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for transfer of
ISRO’s lithium-ion cell technology. The Vikram Sarabhai
Space Centre (VSSC), a part of ISRO, has developed
technology to produce space grade lithium ion cells of
various kinds, to power its rockets and satellites. VSSC,
ISRO would be providing this technology to TCL on a
non-exclusive basis, to manufacture cells of varying
capacity, size, energy density and power density - catering
to a wide spectrum of power storage requirements.
SpaceX cargo spacecraft reaches ISS
A SpaceX shipment arrived at the International Space
Station (ISS) on May 6. The Dragon capsule delivered
2,500 kilograms of equipment and experiments. Canadian
astronaut David Saint-Jacques used the station’s big robot
arm to capture the Dragon approximately 400 kms above
the North Atlantic Ocean. SpaceX launched the capsule
on May 5 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The Dragon will
remain about a month, being filled with science samples
for return to Earth.
National Technology Day celebrated
The National Technology Day was celebrated on May 11.
The Day commemorates India’s success in using science
and technology to address the challenges facing the
country. India also executed three successful nuclear tests,
carried out at Pokhran, in Rajasthan on May 11, 1998.
The first, indigenous aircraft “Hansa-3” was test flown at
Bangalore on this day. India also performed successful
test firing of the Trishul missile on the same day. Every
year since 1999, the country commemorates the day by
honouring technological innovations that have added to
the nation’s growth.

Gopalganj to Raisina Road’ by Lalu Prasad Yadav and Nalin Verma
This is the first time in his five-decade long political
career that 71-year old Lalu Prasad Yadav, former Chief
Minister of Bihar, ex-Railways Minister and President of
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), is forced to stay out of
elections. In a column published in an English newspaper,
Sankarshan Thakur, senior journalist and writer of ‘The
Making of Lalu Yadav: Unmaking of Bihar’ (2001), says
that the absence of Lalu Prasad Yadav in Bihar elections
is akin to Bollywood ‘cabaret song without Helen’. In
contemporary politics, Lalu is one of the few politicians
in the country whose personal and political life has been
covered and commented upon by the media in exhaustive
detail. Whether it is the numerous corruption scams
surrounding him and his vast family of nine children or
his seminal role in promoting social equality and ending
caste discrimination in his state, Lalu’s presence
continues to loom large on Bihar’s polity inspite of his
being jailed and banned from contesting election because
of his conviction in fodder scam case of 1996.
‘Gopalganj to Raisina Road: My Political Journey’ co-
authored by Lalu Prasad Yadav and journalist Nalin
Verma, is the saga of Lalu Prasad Yadav who was born in
the family of a cattle herder in an extremely backward
village of Fulwaria in Bihar in June 1948. This book is
also the story of the social, economic and political
changes in the country in the 1990s that completely
altered the political equations prevalent in the country till
then. Never before had a politician born in post-
independence India had risen from such humble
beginnings to occupy top positions in a state and at the
centre.
Prasad has written extensively about the nationwide
student agitation of 1974 against the authoritarian
government of Congress Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
This agitation metamorphosed into a revolution that
eventually led to the defeat of Indira Gandhi in 1977
elections. The inspiration behind this revolution was
Jaiprakash Narayan, a former Congressman, who is
revered by many leading politicians including Lalu. Lalu
was leader of students’ federation in Patna University
then. His unflinching belief in the ideology of staunch
secularism and his strident opposition to the RSS has
remained the defining feature of his politics since then.
This was also the beginning of Lalu’s ideological
opposition to the prominent BJP leaders of Bihar today
including central minister Ravishankar Prasad and current
Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi.

His action as Bihar Chief Minister in September 1990 of
stopping the Rath yatra to build a Ram Temple at the site
in Ayodhya (UP) where Babri Masjid stood and his arrest
of BJP stalwart Lal Krishna Advani who was leading this
procession are seen as defining moments in Lalu’s
political career, This book tells us that after becoming
Chief Minister Lalu used to invite people from the
oppressed castes to official government functions and
accorded them never before seen respect by seating them
on the same platform as his cabinet members and top
bureaucrats. Many commentators see Lalu as the prime
initiator of the concept of ‘social engineering’ in Indian
politics. This involved providing political representation
to discriminated sections of society who had never been
MPs or MLAs. This was an astute strategy as these
sections of society later became Lalu’s most loyal vote
bank. Lalu claims that he was the inspiration behind
Prime Minister V. P. Singh’s controversial
implementation of Mandal Commission
recommendations. Earlier only SC and ST communities
got reservation in govt. jobs and admissions but after
Mandal OBCs also started getting it. Lalu has tried to
portray himself as the messiah of the poor and oppressed
in this book. This may be a minor drawback of this book
which is studded with interesting incidents of Indian
politics that make for an enjoying reading. Lalu has
commented upon his relations with political bigwigs like
former PM Chandrashekhar, former Deputy PM and
Haryana’s ex-CM Devilal and George Fernandes who
began as a socialist but ended up being Defence Minister
in BJP-ruled government of PM Vajpayee. In the chapter
on Bihar CM Nitish Kumar titled ‘Young Brother Nitish’
Lalu has raised doubts on Nitish’s integrity for spending
the larger part of his political career as a critic of BJP and
called his aligning with Narendra Modi as crass political
opportunism.
This autobiography has been written by Lalu at the lowest
ebb of his political career. His political career started
from servant quarter of Patna’s Veterinary College.
Today he is in jail. Upon introspection, Lalu must have
pondered over the direction his political career took. After
beginning as a committed follower of ideals of social
equality promoted by selfless leaders such as Ram
Manohar Lohia, Jaiprakash Narayan and Karpoori
Thakur, Lalu’s career degenerated into nepotism and
corruption that has put him behind bars. He must be ruing
his life as a missed opportunity after the promising
beginning he made and the top positions he occupied.
