CHANDRA PUSHKARINI :

Chandra Pushkarini is a Beautiful pond situated in the northern side of 4 th

enclosure. It is a round shaped holy pond. The moon God (Chandra) bathed in this
sacred water of Puskarini(holy pond) to free him self from the curse given by Daksha.

So this pushkarini is named after him.There are innumerable glorifications on Chandra

Pushkarini in different puranas.

* Many Rishis, Lord Brahma, Four Kumaras, Yamaraj bathed in Chandra Puskarini.

* One who takes bath in these auspicious waters of Chandra Puskarini will be removed
from all of his anxieties and sins of even killing a Brahmana.
* In those days on the holy banks of Chandra Pushkarini the Alwars and Acharyas
delivered discourses on Vaisnava Literatures.

* King Dharmavarma performed severe austerities and penances on these banks of

Chandra Pushkarini in order to bring Ranganath from Ayodhya to Sri Rangam.

* In a scripture Sri Ranga Rajastavam parasara bhattar sings a beautiful pastime

performed by Lord Ranganath and His consort Sri Ranganachiyar on the banks of
Chandra pushkarini. Here is a beautiful tree called Punnai Maram, which bears beautiful
white flowers.

Sometimes Sri Ranga Nachiyar tries to pluck these flowers, but the tree being so high
she couldn’t. Then Ranganathji climbs on the tree and bends it down for Sri Ranga
Nachiyar to pluck the flowers. Then Ranganathji decorates them on the beautiful hairs of
Lakshmi Devi.

* In another purana Srila Vyasadev explains to the sages how the Pushkarini area
shrinking in size from millennium to millennium. In Satya Yuga it’s area was 10 yojanas .
In Treta Yuga it shrinked to half of the original. And in Dwapar Yuga it was further
shrinked to half. And in Kali Yuga it became half to the area of Dwapara yuga.
* Chandra Puskarini also reflects the degraded qualities of Kali Yuga by its reduced
small size, change of colour in Green and Red and also its raising temperature. If pious
kings rule the kingdom the color of water of this pushkarini will be in milky white. When
the brahmanas are very happy and peaceful then it has clarity that of crystal. All these are
mentioned in different puranas written by Srila Vyasadev.

* Once Sripad Ramanujacharya happened to give his remnants of mahaprasadam to

fishes of this Chandra Pushkarini, then the fishes immediately regained their original
spiritual forms and went back to spiritual world infront of all the devotees assembled
there.
* Near by Chandra Pushkarini there is a
temple of Sri Radha Krishna in a special
embracing form.

*There are other small temples also like

Tondaradippodi alwar, Lord Vardaraj
and Vyasadev.

* During the festival the small deity of

Lord Ranganath is given a bath in this
Pushkarini by the vaishnavas it is called
as Tirthavari Seva.
