A Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 10

Prepared By: Catherine A. Dizon

I. Objective
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
A. Define the Density -Independent and Density-Dependent
factors.
B. Identify the Density -Independent and Density-
Dependent limiting factors.
C. Compare and contrast exponential and logistic growth.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: The Ups and Downs of Population Growth
B. Reference: Grade 10 Science Learner’s and Teacher’s
Material and Internet
C. Instructional Materials: Chalk and board, tarpapel
III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preparatory Activities
“ Good morning class… “ “ Good morning Ma’am”
“Please stand up and let us pray (one student will lead
first” the prayer)
Are all present? Yes Ma’am!
“Very Good”
“Now. Let’s take a review about Students will answer.
the previous lesson.
As a student, What can you do
to maintain the stability of an
ecosystem?
B. Developmental Activity
Motivation
I have here pictures from Yes Ma’am!
different populations. Can you
identify what are they represent
for ?
Students will answer.
Lion killing zebra!

Very Good!
Different kinds of worm
in the human body!

Very Good!
Animals eating dead
animal!

Yes. Good job!

Data of population !

Yes. You’ve got it. Good job!

Presentation of the lesson
After doing the activity , what do Ma’am it is about the
you think is our lesson for today? Population.
Discussion
Now! Who among you can give me the Answer varied
meaning of population ?
(The teacher will discuss the (Listen carefully while
definition based on what they have the teacher discussing)
mentioned and add other
information that was not mentioned
by the students.)
So the question is: Why is a One of the reasons why
population’s size increasing and population is inceasing
deceasing? Yes Annabelle and derceasing is the
birth rate (increase in
number of birth) and
death rate (increase in
number of death.)
Very good, nice try!
Like in human population, the
human population is currently
growing at an exponential rate.
Meaning a population growth is
marked by a rapid increase because
there are plenty of resources available
to support so there is higher birth rate.
On the other hand , the opposite of
exponential population growth is
logistic population gowth in which
population is decreasing as resources
become scarce and the stop when it
reaches the carrying capacity of the
environment.
Picture of :

When resources are unlimited , it

exhibit exponential growth resulting
to J-shaped curve.
When resources are limited , it exhibit
logistic gowth resulting to S-shaped
curve.

Based on picture , what is carrying Carrying capacity is the

capacity? Yes Charmaine maximum number of
organisms that an
environment can hold or
support.
Exactly!

Based on the graph what is the Based on the graph , the

carrying capacity? Why? Yes Ana carrying capacity is 65.
Marie. Because the graph shows
that when the
population of rabbit
reaches 65 in number,
the rabbit’s population
stops growing,
indicating that the area
can only accommodate
and support 65 rabbits.
Good job!
Another question. What have you There is rapid growth
noticed with the population of in the rabbit’s
rabbit between midlle of May and population between
middle of June? Yes Roy. middle of May and
June.
Very good job!
Christopher , will you explain the Density-independent
Density-independent factor? factor Any factor
limiting the size of a
population whose effect is
not dependent on the
number of individuals
in the population. An
example of such a factor
is an earthquake, which
will kill all members of
the population
regardless of whether the
population is small or
large..
Who can give another example of For examples are fires,
Density-independent factor? Yes natural disasters
Kevin. (earthquakes, floods,
tornados), and the
effects of pollution.
Vey Good!
How about the Density-dependent Density-dependent factor
factor? Any volunter? Yes Jospeh. is limiting the size of a
population whose effect is
dependent on the
number of individuals
in the population.
What are examples of Density- An examples are disease
dependent factor that limits the and parasites,
populations? Yes Jasmine. competition for
resources, predation and
emigration.
Well explained! Very good.
Density-dependent limiting factors
take place when a population reaches
the maximum number of organism.
When reaches a certain size , their
won’t be enough resources and could
cause the population to stop growing ,
this will be called a population’s
carrying capacity in a particular
environment.
Precisely!
Yes. Exactly! Good job.
Generalization
To sum up from today’s discussion, Population is the total
can anyone recall the meaning of number of organisms of
population? Yes Janice. the same species in the
same area.
Very Good.
How do limiting factors affect the In the natural world,
population density? Yes Christine. limiting factors like the
availability of food,
water, shelter and space
can change animal and
plant populations. Other
limiting factors, like
competition for
resources, predation and
disease can also impact
populations. ... Other
changes in limiting
factors will cause a
population to decrease.
Application
Why humans continuously increase in This rapid growth
population? Yes Marjorie increase was mainly
caused by a decreasing
death rate and rapidly
increase birth rate.
Good explanation!
IV. Evaluation
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
Identify the given
situations if it is a
dependent or
independent limiting
