 ABSTRACT:

Performance Monitoring is a system monitoring program introduced in Windows NT 3.1. It

monitors various activities on a computer such as CPU or memory usage. This type of
application may be used to determine the cause of problems on a local or remote computer by
measuring the performance of hardware, software services, and applications.

Performance monitoring software helps to ensure the high performance and high availability
of applications by identifying bottlenecks, issues and the user experience is diminished. As
applications become more distributed and complex, issues need to be resolved. To manage
the evolution of applications more easily and cost-effectively, performance monitoring tools
provides greater visibility and control. The complexity of online systems is on the
rise, due in large part to increases in both the footprint and the functionality of ma ny
modern websites. New infrastructure is often needed to deliver content around the
globe, and third-party technologies like CDNs and DNS are often incorporated into a
site to boost its performance and availability. Like any element of your site, these
third parties need to be monitored closely to ensure your overall web performance.
But once you start your monitoring initiative, you might find yourself drowning in
an endless wave of information, thus making it more difficult to get insight into your
online systems. The underlying infrastructure must be able to support the traffic as the
website receives thousands of users every day. High traffic means a large number of
simultaneous requests from user expecting fast load times. Delays can cost the visitors,
reduce revenue and undermine reputation. Taking a smart approach to high traffic website
maintenance cuts down on the load from a large number of visitors and ensures peak
performance from site.
