English for Emails

English for Emails is a course that is designed to help Standardise and professionalise
learners of English learn and practise the language they your organisation’s emails –
need to write effective emails at their workplace. Aimed at
learners with some background knowledge of English, the both internal and external
course covers a range of typical expressions and common
vocabulary used in international email communication.

Individual modules are divided into short sections with clear learning outcomes, and are
designed to provide around 21 hours of online and 15 hours of face-to-face study in total for

Module 1 – Basic skills Contains an introduction to the course, tips on writing


effective subject lines, useful expressions for opening an email,
and guidelines about working with different varieties of English.

Module 2 – First Teaches you how to introduce yourself in writing to


contacts people you do not know, how to refer to a colleague who has
recommended a contact, and how to make arrangements for a
first meeting or phone call.
Module 3 – dealing with Covers writing to colleagues / internal contacts and
information asking for information, responding to simple enquiries for
information about a product or service, and specifying details
which need clarification or confirmation (e.g. pricing, terms of
delivery).
Module 4 – Informal Teaches you how to summarise a recent event, add
reporting personal comments and opinions, and make recommendations.
Module 5 – Apologising Looks at the language needed to apologise for a mistake
and correcting or error, amend information sent in a previous email, and ask
about follow-up actions.
Module 6 – Following up Covers key expressions for referring to a previous email

or communication, discussing advantages and disadvantages
about a particular course of action, and concluding a discussion or
argument.
Module 7 – Expressing Looks at the language needed to remind colleagues of
urgency upcoming deadlines, how to chase up work which has not arrived
urgency on time, and how to use softening language to tone down
requests for urgency.
Module 8 – Instructions Covers the language needed to explain what you want
and directives the reader to do with an attachment, to give instructions to
colleagues, and to understand and write clear directives about key
issues.
Module 9 – Focusing on Teaches you how to say thank you in an email, ask for
details further information about an event or topic discussed in a previous
email, and use call to action expressions at the end of an email.
Module 10 - Writing Provides training in how to write emails expressing
about sympathy to business partners and colleagues, how to write,
personal matters accept and decline invitations of a business or personal nature,
and also looks at the language needed to compliment a colleague
or subordinate on a job well done.
