1) A 10 mm diameter tensile specimen has a 50 mm gauge length. The load corresponding to the
0.2% offset is 55 kN and the maximum load is 70 kN. Fracture occurs at 60 kN. The diameter
after fracture is 8 mm and the gauge length at fracture is 65 mm. Calculate the following
properties of the material from the tension test.
i. % Elongation
ii. Reduction of Area (RA) %
iii. Tensile strength or ultimate tensile strength (UTS)
iv. Yield strength
v. Fracture strength
vi. If E = 200 GPa, the elastic recoverable strain at maximum load
vii. If the elongation at maximum load (the uniform elongation) is 20%, find the plastic
strain at maximum load

3) A laminated wooden beam 100 mm wide and 150 mm deep is made of three 50 mm by
100 mm planks glued together to resist longitudinal shear. The beam is simply
supported over a span of 2 m. if the allowable shearing stresses in the glued joints is 4
kg/cm2, find the safe concentrated load that the beam may carry at its centre

6) A flat plate 3 m long and 1.5 cm thick uniformly tapers from 10 cm width to 4 cm
width. Determine the extension of the plate when an axial pull of 6 tonnes acts on the
plate. Take E = 2.0*106 kg/cm2
