INSTRUCTION DIVISION
FIRST SEMESTER 2011-2012
Course Handout Part II
Date: 09/05/2011

In addition to part -I (General Handout for all courses appended to the time table) this portion gives
further specific details regarding the course.

Course No. : ME C392

Course Title : Advanced Mechanics of Solids and Kinematics
Instructor-in-charge : Y V D RAO
Instructor : B. Madhavi

1. Scope and Objective of the Course:

The first part deal with in-depth analysis of some advanced topics in Mechanics of Solids,
beyond what is covered in the common course Mechanics of Solids ES C221.
The second part deals with kinematics of simple mechanisms and motion generation, which
lays foundation for further study in Dynamics and Vibration ME C442.
2. Course Description:
The course work starts with Generalized Hooke’s law and Three Dimensional Stress Strain
Relations. Then a detailed discussion of energy methods for solving indeterminate problems is
included. Theories of Asymmetrical Bending, Curved Beams and Thick Cylinders are dealt
with in later chapters. A chapter with a brief study on Contact Stress is also included.
In the second part of the course, introduction to Mechanisms and Machines is given first and
then Kinematics of Mechanisms and Machines is explained. Procedure for drawing Velocity
and Acceleration diagrams for Planar Mechanisms is explained which is a Graphical method.
Then analytical methods of analysis of Planar Mechanisms is dealt. Kinematics of Cam and
Synthesis of Cam Profile and study and analysis Gear Trains are taught in the last two chapters.
