Art Appreciation

1. What contemporary art forms or art expressions utilize the principle of

appropriation? (just one principle)
Appropriation of art is often seen in our contemporary world. There are many
artists who uses or adapts the nature of appropriation in their artworks. Pop Art can be one of
those art expressions that most certainly utilizes the principle of appropriation by creating a
painting into a two-colored artwork. With this action, the art is considered new by borrowing the
already established artwork and turning it into something that is up-to-date with the society.
Some also adapt the idea of appropriation in their propaganda. Placing or borrowing a
controversial artwork and renewing the piece in order to express another ideology. Different
artists use appropriation to showcase a brand-new image with the connection of past works.

2. Why do you think people appropriate?

I think if I were to describe the behavior or ideology of people these days, I would
refer to them as creative and image-consumed society. We are usually attracted to those that are
visually attractive and focus our attention to certain genres of art that are unconventional and
distorted. With this reason, most youth in our generation never opt to the classic art. As a result,
maybe people appropriate so they can revive or express the ideals of classical art in the modern
world. For the youth to understand and observe the former artworks in a different aesthetic.

3. What art forms are commonly appropriated?

Art forms such as photography, painting, sculpture, visual media and new media
uses and often apply appropriation in their artworks. Paintings of famous artist are usually
appropriated and used in different media. Sculptures of classic antiques are often appropriated
into visual medias. Some even use the idea of appropriation to advertise and promote their
products to the public. One example could be the appropriation of Michelangelo’s David in the
ad campaign of Calvin Klein’s underwear. Memes can be considered to use appropriation for
humor and amusement. Such us the painting of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa used in different
mediums and memes with entertaining displays and additions.
