Subject Matter: “Handling Communicative Events

– Persuasion in Argumentation and Debate”

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

 Demonstrate the certain steps in argumentation
 Appreciate the importance of reasoning in argumentation and debate

Instructional Strip of papers containing words that are related to the topic.

Materials: Manila paper containing the lesson.


Teaching Aids: manila paper, marker, bond paper, strips of coloured paper for design

Hook: The class will be divided into four groups. Groups 1 and 2 will debate on a
specific issue that will be given to them. They will also pick their stand, either
Pros or Cons. The same rules with groups 3 and 4. The teacher will post the
criteria for the activity on how they will be graded.

Presentation: The teacher will discuss:

1. Argumentation - definition
 Certain steps to follow in argumentation
Debate – definition
2. Debater must achieve in a debate
3. Argumentation and Refutation
4. Importance of Argumentation and debate
5. Words used in an argumentation and debate
6. Types of Group Discussion
 The single-leader type
 The town-meeting type
 The panel of round table discussion
 The debate

Procedure: Practice: “Learn about word”. The teacher will post a manila paper containing
the set of words related to argumentation and debate. The students should be able
to supply or give appropriate words for vocabulary development.

Produce: The class will be divided into four groups. Group 1 will face group 2 as
their opponent. Group 3 will face group 4 as their opponent. They will be given a
current issue to debate on. The criteria will be discussed by the teacher before
they start the debate. Each group will be given a maximum of 5 minutes to have
exchanges of their stand on a certain subject.

Debate issues:

1. Punishment for children who abandon their parents


2. Medical marijuana legalization in the Philippines
3. Tolerating hazing practices in military institutions
4. Mandatory ROTC for college students

Assessment:

The class will be divided into four groups, will apply the guidelines for debate and
the group with the most observed practices will win.

Citation of facts / evidence 40%


Firmness on stand/point 20%
Use of cue words to debate 20%
Body posture 10%
Context consistency 10%

Assignment: State your stand in the “No Homework Policy.” Cite basis of your argument why
it should or should not be implemented. Write your explanation on a 1 whole
sheet of yellow paper, maximum of 150 words.
