CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

This chapter includes the introduction, statement of the problem, significance of the

study, operational definition of terms used, assumption, scope and delimitation, conceptual

paradigm and conceptual framework.

Introduction

Senior high school or SHS refers to the last two years of K to 12 Program that has been

implemented by the Department of Education here in the Philippines since 2012-namely grades

11 and 12. Students are now required to choose their preferred senior high strands upon their

entrance and to begin studying the subjects that are going to introduce them to the career path

that they want to take.

The senior high school program is further broken down into learning strands and career

tracks. There are currently four tracks composed of Academic, TVL/TLE, Arts and Design, and

Sports. The eight learning strands, meanwhile, are STEM, HUMSS, ABM, GAS, Home

Economics, Agri-fishery, Industrial Arts and ICT.

Students face a number of academic challenges in Senior High School, including finding

time to study, understanding course content and maintaining a high degree of motivation. Along

with meeting these challenges, challenges often struggle to balance academic demands with

work, personal responsibilities, and social experiences.

``

Under HUMSS strand are expected to have communication and interpersonal skills. One

of these challenges faced by the students under this strand is the reading and writing

requirements they have to finish. Under ABM strand readers’ students for the corporate world.

And one of the many challenges in ABM is the decision-making that students have to face.

Aside from those challenges, here are some Senior High School problems that every student can

relate:

 Tight Budget- There are schools that require students to start with traditional art

before going to digital art. So, students need to buy a lot of various art materials to

meet the course requires.

 Overwhelming Schedule- These maybe a problem for those who can’t seem to

manage their time well. Further, this may result in poor sleeping habits.

 Lack of Skills- Lack of skills may hinder students to advance in their academics.

It may cause them to lose confidence and interest in their school performance and

dedication in what they do.

 Lacking of Motivation- For some students, Limited motivation is a major

concern. If you don’t have clear goals and an understanding of what you want to

complete a class or school, Your motivation maybe lacking. Unmotivated students

are less inclined to stay up late to study or turn away from social pulls to get

schoolwork done. Additionally, Struggling students who lack motivation may

quickly develop a feeling pf helplessness once they experience failure on a paper,

test or project

``
DATA CENTER COLLEGE OF THE PHILIPPINES

 Lack of Confidence- It can be defined as a lack of faith in one’s abilities and

competence.

 Teacher Factor-It is considered as an influencer in academic performance of a

student.

According to Global Assignment help Australia, insufficient time is the most common

issue faced by the students all over Australia. They lack time to complete their assignments,

research papers, term papers, coursework, case study, and other school requirements. They also

added lack of skills as one of the academic challenges of students in Australia and it is the reason

for their low grades.

In the study focused on learning difficulties experienced by East Asian International

(EAI) students, the findings suggest that language limitations, academic content and learning

styles were associated with difficulties in their learning. Difficulties with academic content

appeared to act as the major barrier to their academic performance rather than English Language.

In the early findings, Asian Students often experienced difficulties in tasks that are

particularly related to language proficiency and there is a popular belief that Asian Students are

only surface learners.

The response rate of the study of the Academic Development Special Interest Group

(ADSIG) of CGEA, students generally sought assistance for problems related to testing,

management of time and instructional materials, course remediation, and needing tutors during

the first two years. Help for general stress and anxiety remained constant across all four years.

``
DATA CENTER COLLEGE OF THE PHILIPPINES

Corresponding, Laws and Fiedler (2013), stated that studying at University can

generate social pressures particularly in youth, which have been associated with the onset of

mental illness or a worsening of an existing condition. Selesho (2012) presented an explanatory

study focused on the problems of academic ability and the psychological challenges that affect

first year students as they progress from grade 12 to University studies.

It was revealed in the study of Gudjons et al. (2009) that the students’ educational

problems were different in various study fields. There were significantly more problems in male

and non-native students (who are less supported by the families) compared to female and native

ones. Family, financial and health problems, lack of enough knowledge among students and

tutors about educational rules are the most important factors to the students’ educational

problem.

Akman (2007) conducted a study aimed to finding the problems of Turkish University

students and how their academic problems are related to their family problems and how their

age, gender, and identity status impacted the problems. The results of the study showed that there

is a direct relation between gender and identity- foreclosure and moratorium, and between age

and identity status. Depending on the evaluation of insensitivity and inconsistency with the

family, the Identity Achievement scores of the students decrease, however, the scores of

moratorium and identity diffusion increase.

The psychological problems of the students who seek counselling services and attempts

to determine whether the problems presented by these students differ in any way from the types

of emotional problems reported by the General College population studied by previous

investigators, Horenstaien (1977). The review of literature indicates that University students

``

encounter many different academic, psychological, social health and economic problems. The

focus of these problems is different according to the areas, environment, economic situation and

social background but whatever the differences we can still get clues about how to find suitable

solutions for the challenges that faced students in general.

Parent’s positive attitude towards child’s education is important in determining school

attendance and academic achievement of the child. Favorable attitude of towards schooling and

education enhances parental involvement in children’s present and future studies. Krashen

(2005) concluded that whose parents are educated score higher than standardized test than those

whose parents were not educated. Educated parents can better communicate with their children

regarding the school works, activities and information being taught at school. They can better

assist their children in their work and participate at school ( Fantuzzo and Tighe, 2000; Trusty

1999).

Theory educational productivity by Walberg (1981) determined three groups in nine

factors based on affective, cognitive and behavioral skills for optimization of learning that affect

the quality of academic performance: Aptitude (ability, development, and motivation);

Instruction (amount and quality); Environment (home, classroom, peers, and television) Roberts,

2007). The home environmental also affects the academic performance of students. Educated

parents can provide such an environment that suits best for academic success of their children.

The school authorities can provide counselling and guidance to parents for creating positive

homes environment for improvement in students quality of work. (Marzano, 2003). The

academic performance of students heavily depends upon the parental involvement in their

``
DATA CENTER COLLEGE OF THE PHILIPPINES

academic activities to attain the higher level of quality in academic success (Barnard, 2004;

Henderson, 1988; Shumox and Lomax, 2001).

According to Aromin et al. (2016), the students at this age tend to have second thoughts

on which to prioritize move, their extra-curricular activities or their academic works. Extra-

curricular activities often cost money to participate in some sort of “pay-to-play” fee, (Wilson

2009).

In addition, scarcity of the resources is also one of the challenges of students as stated

by Global Assignment Help Australia. In some cases, the students cannot gather the relevant

information or materials needed for their project. Another is having no interest in the subject.

This eventually results in dreadful grades.

Operational Definition of Terms

 Academic- It is used to describe things that relate to the work done in schools, especially

works which involves studying and reasoning rather than practical or technical skills.

 Challenges- These are the situations of being faced with something that needs great

mental or physical effort in order to be done successfully and therefore tests a person’s

ability.

 Senior High School- It refers to the last two years of K-12 Program of the Department of

Education in the Philippines.

 Student- This is the one who studies; learner, scholar

 Skills- This is an ability to do an activity or job well, especially because you have

practiced it.

 Insufficient Time- This means there is not enough time.

 School Requirements- It is a requirement for admission to or completion of an academic

program.

Research Methodology

This chapter presents the method and procedures that the researchers used. This contains

the research design, population and sampling, data gathering instrument and data gathering

procedure.

Research Design

This study made used of descriptive research since the purpose of this study is to know the

academic challenges encountered by the students of DCCP, Bangued.

The method descriptive is the most fitted design because it aims to accurately and

systemically describe a population, situation or phenomenon.

Population and Sampling

The respondents of this study are the grade 11- ICT students of Data Center College of the

Philippines, Bangued. There are 21 students in the said strand.

Data Gathering Instrument

The data gathering instrument used by the researchers in this study was questionnaire.

Data Gathering Procedure

For the purposes of this research, survey questionnaire. But before the researchers

conducted the survey, they first Made a letter that was been checked by the advisers of every

strand of SHS students of DCCP, Bangued as a proof that the researchers are doing a legal

collection of respondents and also to respect.

``
DATA CENTER COLLEGE OF THE PHILIPPINES

Second, the researchers personally asked the SHS students of DCCP, Bnagued if they are

willing to answer the questionnaire. The researchers did not force any of them, it was been their

own choice.

Last was the answering of the survey questionnaire and gathering more information about

the study.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data gathered were organized, tabulated and subjected to statistical treatment in order

to answer the questions of the study. Combinations of descriptive and inferential statistics were

used in the analysis and interpretation of data. Frequencies and percentages were employed to

describe the profile of the respondents of the study. The formulas are provided below;

Frequency (f), it refers to the number of times a score or value appears in a group of

scores or values.

Percentage (%), it is the numerical value that shows the proportion of a single value (f)

to the total population.

The formula is:

𝑓
Percentage − (𝑁) x 100%

Where:
N – Is the total population
F – Is the frequency
100% - Is the constant multiplier
