Honourable chairs and fellow delegates:

Do you think it is possible for us to live in a world with open defecation? The people in my country
thinks not. We believe we can successfully end open defecation , by improving affordable access to
water and sanitation services.

The delegation of Nigeria believes that reducing open defecation is significant to our United Nations
assembly. The delegate of Nigeria feels that the problem of children dying before the age of five is
one that requires immediate attention because it can have negative effects on cognitive
development.

UNICEF’s objectives for sanitation (as per Goal Area 4 in the Strategic Plan 2018-2021) will ensure
that there is a strong emphasis on both equity and the sustainability of results, in line with UNICEF’s
WASH Strategy 2016-2030. Ultimately, the game plan sets out how UNICEF can and will do its part to
ensure more children can grow up in a safe and clean environment.

Lack of basic health equipment, hygiene and resources have been the main contributors to higher
child mortality rates, higher morbidity rates and serious illnesses. Being a more economically
developed country, Nigeria has contributed funds towards rectifying this problem and would invite
other MEDC’s to do the same.

Additionally, the delegate of Nigeria strongly encourages the implementation of measures to

Improve accessible access to water, measures to decrease in poverty and measures to increase
better health rate population.

The delegate of Nigeria hopes for a fruitful and constructive debate in order to solve the issues at
hand today.

Thank you
