    The sliding filament theory of muscle contraction involves motor neurons signaling muscle fibers to contract. Muscle fibers contain myofibrils made up of thin actin filaments and thick myosin filaments. When a motor neuron fires, it triggers the release of calcium ions which causes the myosin heads to pull the actin filaments towards the center of the sarcomere, shortening the muscle fiber and causing contraction. As calcium ions are reabsorbed, the muscle fiber returns to its normal relaxed state.
