Badio Elementary School (BES) in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte has acquired a beneficial and more
secure procedure of monitoring students’ school attendance. The program being used is Scan
Attendance Manager, a free app that can be downloaded from the internet. The application is
able to scan the ID’s barcode and can send SMS to the guardian’s mobile phone number. The
system benefits the school in such ways that it gives parents assurance that their children arrived
at the school and teachers can now keep track of student’s attendance with ease. Adriano (2019)
has stated that the system is making students at BES wanting to go to school and their parents
commended the school for looking after their children.

Sta. Ana National High School (SANHS) in Davao adopted a new digital monitoring system that
when a student swipes their identification card, their information will be shown on the screen
and their guardian will receive a text message regarding the student’s entrance or exit of the
campus. According to Real (2019), the parents were made aware of the proposed ID system, of
whom they gotten the approval of, and that the students were enthusiastic about it. Real also
stated that the system could help avoid unnecessary absences and prevent students from cutting
classes.

According to Maleriado (2018), a teacher from General Emilio Aguinaldo National High School
(GEANHS) in Manila, monitoring students’ attendance by scanning QR codes has advantages such
as it helps the environment, saves money and resources, and gives easier access to data.
However, it also has some drawbacks. Some files can be unintentionally deleted and records be
lost if the user is careless.

According to Mahyidin (2008), the research and discovery of Radio Frequency Identification
(RFID) started in the 1970s. It is commonly used to transmit and receive information without the
use of wires. The RFID tags can be read using readers through a distance using radio waves of
different frequencies. The signal transmitted by the antenna activates the transponder (the tag),
the tag then transmits data back to the antenna.

Yadav and Nainan (2014) stated that their RFID Based Student Attendance System with
Notification to Parents using GSM can provide a new, precise, and easier method of recording
the attendance of the students in school. The low cost system can lay out several conveniences
than the traditional way of tracking attendance. The system helps by automatically storing
attendance and notifying parents. The system ensures fast operation, cost effectiveness, and low
power consumption.

As stated in the report by Gupta (2012), there are several advantages of RFID over using
barcodes. RFID tags can be read through materials such as clothing while reading barcodes can
be limited or problematic due to the need of a direct “line of sight” in order to be scanned,
thus, RFID tags can be read faster than bar codes. However, RFID also has some common
problems. Reader collision happens when multiple signals overlap. Therefore, systems must be
carefully set up to avoid this problem.
