The design traffic in terms of cumulative no.of standard axles to be carried during the design life of the road
is computed from the following formula.
n
N = 365 [ ( 1 + r ) - 1 ] x A x F x D
r
Where N = Cumulative number of standard axles to be catered for in the design in terms of msa
A = Initial traffic ( commercial vehicles per day ) in the year of completion of construction
D = Lane distribution factor
F = Vehicle damage factor ( number of standard axles per commercial vehicle )
n = Design life in years
r = Annual growth rate of commercial traffic
The traffic in the year of completion is estimated using the following formula.
x
A = P ( 1 + r )
Where P = Number of commercial vehicles per day at last count
x = Number of years between the last count and the year of completion of construction
A = 326 CVPD
And
15
N = 365 [ ( 1 + 0.05 ) - 1 ] x 326 x 0.75 x 3.9
0.05
Thus
N = 7510327 or 7.51 msa
