CULTURE

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOME

 Define and explain the origin of the term culture.


 Discuss and explain the organizational patterns in society.

RATIONALE

Culture is defined as the social behavior and norms found in human societies. It is
considered a central concept in anthropology, encompassing the range of phenomena that are
transmitted through social learning in human societies.
Culture consists of the beliefs, behaviors, objects, and other characteristics common to
the members of a particular group or society.

CULTURE: THE ORGANIZATION OF BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS IN A SOCIETY


Culture has at least two popular notions.
 Firstly, it may be defined as the individual’s taste, inclination and interest in the “Fine
arts”.
 Secondly, it is commonly referred to as being civilized.

ORIGIN OF THE TERM “CULTURE”


 Culture is derived from the Latin word “cultura” or “cultus” which means care or
cultivation.
 Culture as cultivation implies that every human being is a potential member of his own
social group.

THE CLASSIC DEFINITION OF CULTURE


 According to Sir Edward Taylor, an English anthropologist, culture is that complex whole
which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, laws, customs and any other capabilities
and habits acquired by man as a member of society.
 It is something acquired by man as a member of society.

PERTINENT MEANING OF CULTURE


1. Culture as a social heritage.
2. Culture as a distinguishing factor.
3. Culture as an established pattern of behavior.

 Culture, as psychologically observable phenomenon, includes the explicit (overt), and


implicit (mental or covert) behaviors.
 Culture as an explicit behavior.
 Culture as an implicit behavior.

 Culture is both material and immaterial. It is consist of both its material and immaterial
aspects.
 Material – the material culture is given different terms like objects, tools, things,
artifacts, economic goods, property and nonsymbolic.
 Immaterial – it is composed of the behavior, thoughts, beliefs, feelings as well as the
intellectual, artistic, and social ideals and values
