#RoadTripNiPedro Program – Votive Mass of St. Padre Calungsod

Votive Masses of the mysteries of the Lord or in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary or of the Angels
or of any given Saint or of all the Saints may be said in response to the devotion of the faithful on
weekdays in Ordinary Time, even if an Optional Memorial occurs (General Instruction of the
Roman Missal, no. 375).

If some serious pastoral benefit is to be gained, an appropriately corresponding Votive Mass may
be used, at the direction of the Ordinary, or with his permission, except on Solemnities, on the
Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, on days within the Octave of Easter, on the Commemoration
of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day), on Ash Wednesday, and on the weekdays of Holy
Week.

Votive Masses are in principle forbidden on days on which there occurs an Obligatory Memorial,
on a weekday of Advent up to and including December 16, on a weekday of Christmas Time from
January 2, or on a weekday of Easter Time after the Octave of Easter. However, for pastoral
reasons, as determined by the rector of the church or the Priest Celebrant himself, an
appropriately corresponding Votive Mass may be used in celebration of Mass with the people. On
weekdays in Ordinary Time, even if an Optional Memorial occurs, a Votive Mass may be chosen
by the Priest Celebrant for the sake of the devotion of the faithful.

Vestment: Red
The readings and prayer for this mass were taken from the Common of Martyrs: For One Missionary
Martyr.

This Introduction is to be used for the Send-Off Mass on July 13, 2019. Check the appendix for the
Introduction and Prayers of the faithful to be used by the vicariate in their Send-Off Mass.

We are gathered here today to celebrate this Holy Eucharist in honor of Saint Pedro Calungsod,
patron of the Filipino youth.

Saint Pedro Calungsod was a teenage native of the Visayan region in the Philippines. He was
among the first to serve the Mission organized by Fr. Diego Luis de San Vitores SJ, in Marianas on
June 16, 1668. On April 2, 1672, he was speared and struck to death with a cutlass together with
Fr, Diego by two unbelieving villagers in Tumhon, Guam, for catechizing and baptizing the
natives. Their bodies were thrown into the deep ocean. He was beatified on March 5, 200 by Saint
John Paul II, and was canonized as saint by Pope-Emeritus Benedict XVI on October 21, 2013.

In this Eucharistic celebration, let us pray, that like Saint Pedro Calungsod, we may be
strengthened to become committed and courageous servants of the Lord who will bring Christ’s
love to the all the faithful, especially to the youth of today. In a very special way, let us include
them in our intentions for today.

Let us now rise as we begin this Eucharistic Celebration and acknowledge the presence of our
Lord in the person of our presider, Rev. Fr. Ricky Soriano.

GREETINGS
Priest: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit.
All: Amen.
Priest: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the
communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
All: And with your Spirit.

PENITENTIAL ACT
Priest: Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins,
and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

All: I confess to almighty God and to you, my

brothers and sisters, that I have greatly
sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in
what I have done and in what I have failed
to do,
And, striking their breast, they say:
through my fault, through my fault, through my most
grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the
Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and
sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Priest: May almighty God have mercy on us,

forgive us our sins, and bring us to
everlasting life.
All: Amen.

COLLECT
Priest: Let us pray.
All-powerful and eternal God, you made Saint Pedro Calungsod faithful in
the preaching of the Gospel even to the point of shedding his blood. By his
merits and intercession, grant that we may also be strong in faith to
persevere until death. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and
ever.

All: Amen.

The selected readings were taken from Common of Martyrs. The readings of the day may be used in place
of the readings set for this Votive Mass.

1ST READING | Sirach 51.1-8

A reading from the book of Sirach.

I give you thanks, O Lord and King, and praise you, O God my Saviour. I give thanks to
your name, for you have been my protector and helper and have delivered me from
destruction and from the trap laid by a slanderous tongue, from lips that fabricate
lies. In the face of my adversaries you have been my helper and delivered me, in the
greatness of your mercy and of your name, from grinding teeth about to devour me,
from the hand of those seeking my life, from the many troubles I endured, from
choking fire on every side, and from the midst of fire that I had not kindled, from the
deep belly of Hades, from an unclean tongue and lying words—
the slander of an unrighteous tongue to the king. My soul drew near to death, and my
life was on the brink of Hades below. They surrounded me on every side, and there
was no one to help me; I looked for human assistance, and there was none. Then I
remembered your mercy, O Lord, and your kindness from of old, for you rescue
those who wait for you and save them from the hand of their enemies.

The word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM | Psalm 124.2-3, 4-5, 7b-8 (R.7a)

R. Our soul has escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net.

If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when our enemies attacked
us,
then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled
against us. R.

Then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over
us;
then over us would have gone
the raging waters. R.

The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. R.

If appropriate, this reading is read.

2ND READING | 2 Corinthians 6.4-10

A reading from the second letter of Paul to the Corinthians.

As servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through

great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings,
imprisonments, riots, labours, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity,
knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful
speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right
hand and for the left; in honour and dishonour, in ill repute and good repute.
We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet are well
known; as dying, and see—we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; as
sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having
nothing, and yet possessing everything.

The word of the Lord.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION | Matthew 5.10

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Blessed are those who suffer persecution for

justice’s sake; the kingdom of heaven is
theirs.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

GOSPEL READING
Priest: The Lord be with you.
All: And with your Spirit.
Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.
All: Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to his disciples: “Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls
into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears
much fruit. “Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in
this world will keep it for eternal life. “Whoever serves me must follow me,
and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father
will honour.”

The gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

HOMILY

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

Priest: Saint Pedro Calungsod lived his life for the service of the
Gospel and died as a martyr while doing his mission among
the unbelievers. Let us pray to God our Father that, through
his intercession, we may be able to continually work for the
propagation of the Gospel of Christ among our communities.
Full of confidence, we pray:

R: LORD, GRACIOUSLY HEAR OUR PRAYER

5|Page

#RoadTripNiPedro Program – Votive Mass of St. Padre Calungsod

1. May the Pope, bishops, priests, deacons and consecrated

men and women never tire of doing their mission in
spreading the Good News of Christ to all, amidst
persecution and trials faced by the Church. Let us pray to
the Lord.

2. May government and civil leaders always strive to serve the

common good of our communities. May their selflessness,
commitment to serve people equally and fear of the Lord be
seen in the way they govern our nation. Let us pray to the
Lord.

3. May all those who are suffering and those who are
experiencing persecution, conflict, hopelessness, and pain
be comforted, affirmed, and strengthened by the people
who are helping them. Let us pray to the Lord.

4. May all young people draw themselves closer to the Lord

and follow the example of Saint Pedro Calungsod, so that
they may commit themselves in serving their local
parishes and communities and in living and sharing Christ
in their own little ways. Let us pray to the Lord.

5. May this pilgrimage of Saint Pedro Calungsod strengthen

the faith of all who are gathered here today and yield fruits
of active and charitable service to others by bringing the
message of Christ to them. Let us pray to the Lord.

6. May the faithful departed enjoy the peace of Christ, in

union with all the angels and saints in heaven. Let us pray
to the Lord.

Priest: Graciously hear the prayers of your people, O Lord, and help
us to strive to become saints like Saint Pedro Calungsod.
Unite us closer to You, and sustain us in our everyday needs.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

#RoadTripNiPedro Program – Votive Mass of St. Padre Calungsod

When all this has been done, the Offertory Chant begins.
It is desirable that the faithful express their participation by making an offering, bringing forward bread
and wine for the celebration of the Eucharist and perhaps other gifts to relieve the needs of the Church
and of the poor.

The Priest, standing at the altar, takes the paten with the bread and holds it
slightly raised above the altar with both hands, saying in a low voice:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we
have received the bread we offer
you:
fruit of the earth and work of
human hands, it will become
for us the bread of life.
If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words
aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:

Blessed be God for ever.

The Deacon, or the Priest, pours wine and a little water into the chalice, saying quietly:

By the mystery of this water and wine

may we come to share in the
divinity of Christ who humbled
himself to share in our humanity.
The Priest then takes the chalice and holds it slightly raised above the altar with
both hands, saying in a low voice:

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation,

for through your goodness we
have received the wine we offer
you:
fruit of the vine and work of
human hands, it will become
our spiritual drink.

If, however, the Offertory Chant is not sung, the Priest may speak these words
aloud; at the end, the people may acclaim:

Blessed be God for ever.

After this, the Priest, bowing profoundly, says quietly:

With humble spirit and

contrite heart may we be
accepted by you, O Lord,
and may our sacrifice in your
sight this day be pleasing to
you, Lord God.
If appropriate, he also incenses the offerings, the cross, and the altar. A
Deacon or other minister then incenses the Priest and the people.
Then the Priest, standing at the side of the altar, washes his hands, saying quietly:

Wash me, O Lord, from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

Priest: Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and

yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.

All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of
his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS

Priest: As we commemorate the martyrdom of blessed Pedro
Calungsod, O Lord, we make our offerings at your altar,
praying that we, who celebrate the mysteries of our Lord’s
Passion, may imitate what we now do. Through Christ our
Lord.

All: Amen.

PREFACE OF HOLY MARTYRS I

Priest: The Lord be with you.
All: And with your spirit.
Priest: Lift up your hearts.
All: We lift them up to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
All: It is right and just.

It is truly right and just, our duty and

our salvation, always and everywhere
to give you thanks,
Lord, holy Father, almighty and
eternal God.

For the blood of your blessed Martyr

Pedro Calungsod, poured out like
Christ’s to glorify your name,
shows forth your marvelous works,
by which in our weakness you perfect
your power
and on the feeble bestow strength to
bear you witness, through Christ our
Lord.

And so, with the Powers of heaven, we

worship you constantly on earth, and
before your majesty
without end we acclaim:

All: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the
Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER III

Priest: You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly
gives you praise, for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by
the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all
things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a
people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting
a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.

Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you: by the same Spirit

graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for
consecration, that they may become the Body and + Blood of
your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we
celebrate these mysteries.

For on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread, and,

giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and
gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS

MY BODY,
WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice,

and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, and gave the chalice
to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS
IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT,
WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY
FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

The mystery of faith.

Priest: Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving

Passion of your Son, his wondrous Resurrection and Ascension
into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we
offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we
pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the
sacrificial Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to
yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and
Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become
one body, one spirit in Christ.

May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may

obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most
Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her
most chaste spouse, with your blessed Apostles and glorious
Martyrs with Saint Pedro Calungsod and Saint Elizabeth of
Hungary and with all the Saints, on whose constant intercession
in your presence we rely for unfailing help.

May this Sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord,

advance the peace and salvation of all the world.
Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim Church
on earth, with your servant Francis our Pope and Jose Romeo our
Bishop, the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire
people you have gained for your own. Listen graciously to the
prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you:
in your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all
your children scattered throughout the world.

† To our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were

pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind
admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy for ever
the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through
whom you bestow on the world all that is good. †

Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for
ever and ever.

COMMUNION RITE
Priest: At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we
dare to say:

Our Father (to be sung)

Priest: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace
in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always
free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed
hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
All: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever.

Priest: Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you,
my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of
your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in
accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever.
All: Amen.

Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

All: And with your Spirit.

Priest: Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

Then he takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small piece in
the chalice, saying quietly:

May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring
eternal life to us who receive it.
Meanwhile the following is sung or said

Lamb of God (to be sung)

Then the Priest, with hands joined, says quietly:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who, by the will of the Father
and the work of the Holy Spirit, through your Death gave life to the world, free me by this, your
most holy Body and Blood, from all my sins and from every evil; keep me always faithful to your
commandments, and never let me be parted from you.

Or:

May the receiving of your Body and Blood, Lord Jesus Christ, not bring me to judgment and
condemnation, but through your loving mercy be for me protection in mind and body and a
healing remedy.

Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of
the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say
the word and my soul shall be healed.
The Priest, facing the altar, says quietly:

May the Body of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.

And he reverently consumes the Body of Christ.

Then he takes the chalice and says quietly:

May the Blood of Christ keep me safe for eternal life.

And he reverently consumes the Blood of Christ

HOLY COMMUNION

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Priest: As we celebrate the heavenly banquet, we beseech you, Lord, that, in
following such a great example of faith, we may be encouraged by the
remembrance of the blessed Martyr Pedro Calungsod and led on by
his gracious intercession. Through Christ our Lord.
All: Amen

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF THE YOUTH

Leader: Let us now kneel to solemnly pray the Prayer for the Year of the Youth.
(All kneel)
God our Father, we come together as Church, the Body of Christ, and through
Your Holy Spirit, we pray for our young people in this Year of the Youth. In Your
great mercy, You sent Jesus, Your Son, who grew up as a young man among the
youth, became an example for the youth, and consecrated the youth to You.
Hear our young people every time they proclaim:

We are BELOVED. We praise You for Your love for us, which saves and gives

meaning to our lives.

We are GIFTED. We rejoice over the many gifts You give us, enriching us and our
communities.
We are EMPOWERED. we accept Your Spirit Who enables us to share Your love
and grace especially to other youth.

During this Year of the Youth, help the youth of our nation encounter Christ who
always looks at us with love as He did with the rich young man, the disciples on
the road to Emmaus, and those who seek Your Kingdom.

Form us by Your Holy Spirit into credible guides for our young people, like Mary
Magdalene, witness and missionary of the Resurrection, to be IN MISSION:
joyfully proclaiming Christ who died and rose again.

Nourish us and our young people through Your Word and Eucharist, so we may
always choose to be life-giving, especially to the least, lost, and last.

Together with our young people, may we follow the example of our Mother Mary,
whose YES to
You,O God, gave way to the fulfillment of your Divine Will.
We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Pedro Calungsod, patron of Filipino youth, pray for us.

ANIMATION
The AYTS is then animated.

You. Remain with your servants on this holy pilgrimage and
guide their way in accordance with Your will. Shelter them with
Your protection by day, give them the light of Your grace by
night and bring them safely to their destination. We ask this
through Christ Our Lord.
